Description: French Hilltop Village and Church exemplifies Pierre Neveu’s (b.1929) masterful ability to balance architectural precision with the expressive looseness of watercolour. The work captures a sunlit French village perched on a hillside, its ochre-tiled rooftops and church tower emerging above soft greenery and shadowed foliage.
Neveu’s confident draughtsmanship — evident in the elegant linework and architectural clarity — is tempered by fluid, spontaneous brushwork. The artist’s use of transparent layers of green and blue creates a vivid sense of air and depth, while the red rooftops add warmth and structure. The result is both disciplined and lyrical, a hallmark of Neveu’s plein air technique.
A graduate of the École Boulle and École des Beaux-Arts, and later Professor of Drawing for the City of Paris, Neveu infused his landscapes with a quiet sophistication rooted in classical training. His sensitivity to rhythm and light transforms this small composition into a complete, resonant impression of rural France.
