Untitled View of San Giorgio Maggiore, an original watercolor on paper by Róbert Nádler, is a piece for the true collector. An impressively calming nature of this plein-air painting draws you into the scene as if you were standing at the shore's edge, looking out at the island across the water. Gondolas populate the water in the middle ground on the left, with one tied up barely in view at the lower right. Both the technical talent of the artist and choice of subject matter pair perfectly with its custom, gilt frame. San Giorgio Maggiore is a 16th-century Benedictine church on the island of the same name in Venice, northern Italy, designed by Andrea Palladio, and built between 1566 and 1610. The church is a basilica in the classical renaissance style and its brilliant white marble gleams above the blue water of the lagoon opposite the Piazzetta and forms the focal point of the view from every part of the Riva degli Schiavoni. The island and church have been painted by countless artists, including greats like Monet. Provenance: BÁV ZRT., BUDAPEST, HUNGARY, 2003 Artist Info/Bio: ARTIST BIOGRAPHY DOCUMENT IS INCLUDED Documentation: CERTIFICATE OF AUTHENTICITY IS INCLUDED About the Artist: Robert Nadler, a Hungarian artist during the country’s Golden Age of Painting, was well-known for his landscapes that showed a uniform, academic style, a transgression from the artistic guidelines of the age. Nadler started his professional career as an architect, attending the Academy of Fine Arts for the discipline first in Munich, then in Vienna. He always had inclinations for painting, however, regularly participating in art contests while still working in the architecture offices of both Miklós Ybl and Bertalan Székely. Soon, however, those inclinations became his primary focus, and he committed to a life as a painter. He studied under Hungarian landscape painter Emil Schindler. During this time, he traveled frequently. He practiced in Italy, South Tyrol, Bavaria, France, and Egypt. While in Venice, he became close with the famous Pettenkofen. It was also during this time that he painted The Sawmill of Salzkammergut, a painting that was so highly regarded it eventually became property of the king. In 1889, he was invited to head a department of the College of Applied Arts, and this started his decades-long tenure as a professor. This marked a revolution in drawing education, quickly becoming the frontrunner internationally of art schools. Gone were the days of copying already proven pattern sheets and plaster copies. Instead, he stressed the need for artists to develop independence, drawing on nature and imagination, instead of copying. His ideas were so well-regarded that the government sent him across Europe to study the organization and methods of drawing abroad. His travels were almost exclusively dedicated to landscape painting. His paintings of Austrian landscapes, derived from “mood impressionism,” are painted on a blackboard with heavily diluted oil. Usually small, still, and life-like, they are heavily influenced by Hungarian folk design, something he had gained from his friends at the Szolnok Colony of Artists, among them Lajos Deák-Ébner, Pál Vágó, Gyula Aggházy, and Sándor Bihari. Throughout his career, Nadler won several awards, including the State Watercolor Painting Award and the Watercolor Prize of the capital City, and exhibited extensively, perhaps most notably at the Mucsarnok in Budapest. He passed away in 1938.
