Mid 20th Century French architectural watercolour on paper of the Cloiture de St Trophime, in Arles. South of France by Georges Chappuis. Signed bottom left, in plain wood frame. (We will remove the glass for shipping). A charming rendition of this Arles landmark, capturing the feeling of light and shade within the cloister on a sunny South of France day. Great perspective and lovely architectural detail contrasting against the green and colours of the garden. Chappuis lived near Saint Pierre d'Arene Nice, on the cote d'Azur, South of France. The buildings and views of Southern France were the inspiration for much of his work. He was also an illustrator of short stories for Henri Bosco and contributed to an avant-garde monthly artistic magazine called Mediterranea-Nice between 1926 and 1939. The Church of St. Trophime in Arles, France, is an important pilgrimage site and the starting point of the Via Tolosana to Santiago de Compostela.
