Thorald Læssøe
19th Century Architectural Danish Drawing & Watercolour of Frederiksborg Castle

1840s

About the Item

Mid 19th Century watercolour drawing of Frederiksborg Castle by noted Danish artist Thorald Læssøe. The work is monogram signed to the back of the paper where there is another drawing this time a study of a tree (see last photo). There is a location title written on the back of the frame. The drawing is currently framed between two sheets of glass in a period wood frame which bares the artists name and the date to the back. A charming and superbly executed study of this iconic Danish landmark. Læssøe has achieved a wonderful precision in his drawing, beautifully observed, almost an architectural rendering, the whole softened by his use of an ochre lavis for the reflections on the water and the surrounding trees in the foreground. Frederiksborg Castle is a palatial complex in Hillerød, Denmark. It was built as a royal residence for King Christian IV of Denmark-Norway in the early 17th century, replacing an older castle acquired by Frederick II and becoming the largest Renaissance residence in Scandinavia. On three islets in the Slotssøen (castle lake), it is adjoined by a large formal garden in the Baroque style. Thorald Læssøe was a Danish painter who specialized in observational and landscape paintings. He was a student of Christian Holm and Christen Købke, and his works were influenced by J.Th. Lundbye and P.C. Skovgaard. He travelled and lived extensively in Italy and captured many of the famous buildings and landmarks of the 'Grand Tour'. His paintings and drawings are held in major private and national collections worldwide including the Metropolitan Museum of Art New York.
