About the Item
This drawing represents the grand opening of the monument dedicated to Victor Emmanuel II, the first king of Italy, that happened in Turin on September 9, 1899, twenty years after his death.
It was wanted by his son, King Umberto I and made by the architect Pietro Costa. The monument, in bronze and granite, was erected between 1882 and 1899, through many contrasts with the Turin municipal government. The king's statue rises majestically on tall Doric columns, the sculptural groups at the base are the allegories of unity, brotherhood, work and freedom, while the eagles on the corners are holding some wreaths with carved some important dates for the Unification of Italy. The monument reaches a considerable height of 39 meters.
However, this is probably a fiction or a memory more than a live sketch tbecause the buildings on the background don’t corrispond with the ones really existing (also comparing it with pictures of the event) and also the dates depicted are different. It’s interesting to see that in the audience there are also some men dressed up in the typical "Garibaldino"(Garibaldi’s followers, the man who helped the birth of the kingodom of Italy during the Risorgimento). On the bottom right there is a monogram.
