John Faulkner was an Irish landscape and marine painter in oil and watercolor. He entered the Royal Dublin Society Schools in 1848 and first exhibited in 1852 at the Royal Hibernian Academy in Dublin. He was elected an associate member of the academy in 1861, only to be expelled in 1870. Some time prior to this he left Dublin for the United States, where this watercolor was probably painted. He exhibited at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia in 1866 and 1868, when his address was recorded as Sansom Street in Philadelphia. He proceeded to London, where he earned his living by painting watercolors for dealers. Faulkner exhibited at the Royal Hibernian Academy again from 1880 to 1887 and at the Royal Academy in London from 1884 to 1888.

John Faulkner
John Faulkner studied at St. Martin's School in London and was a member of Artists International Association, Newlyn Society of Artists in Cornwall and Penwith Society of St. Ives, Cornwall. He was a university extension lecturer and toured countries such as France, Spain, and Italy with students, lecturing and painting as he toured. While in England, he exhibited regularly and had several one-man shows. Faulkner taught and painted in Cornwall, England, for 10 years before coming to Santa Cruz, California, in 1967. In addition to oils, Faulkner exhibited drawings, watercolors, collages and three-dimensional design constructions, as well as painting mural decorations for large business establishments. He has also worked in restoration, restoring the historic stencil work in the Halsey House on Mission Street in Santa Cruz. Faulkner's work has been exhibited in England, France, Spain, Italy, Switzerland and California.

Claude Hayes was a Dublin born painter who to avoid his father's wish to make a businessman of him ran away to sea and served on the Golden Fleece, one of the transports used in the Abyssinian expedition of 1867-68, and also spent a year in the United States. Returning to London, he studied art at Heatherley's and the Royal Academy Schools, and then in Antwerp, under Charles Verlat. He worked in Hampshire with James Aumonier and also in Surrey with William Charles Estall, whose sister he married.
Hayes exhibited widely in London and provincial centres, and was elected a member of the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours in 1886, the Royal Institute of Oil Painters in 1883, and the Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Watercolour, 1902. He also showed at the RA, RBSA, Brook Street Art Gallery, Dudley Gallery, FAS, GI, Grosvenor Gallery, Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool, MAFA, RBA, RHA, Ridley Art Club, RSW and Walker's Gallery, London. In 1912, Claude Hayes represented England at the Venice Biennale. His work is in various public collections in England and Ireland including the Ulster Museum, Museums Sheffield, Torre Abbey Museum and the Leeds City Art Gallery. His father was the artist Edwin Hayes.
