About the Item

Halo, Drawing, study for a sculpture. ARTIST'S STATEMENT Michael Davis My sculptures and installations are physically and symbolically multilayered mechanisms that react to environments and man-made inventions from the past and the future. More specifically, each piece investigates faith in science and the folly of such a belief in relation to the forces of nature, politics and culture. Informing the work is an aesthetic and an affinity with Minimalist theory equated with political consciousness Minimalism provoked artists to rely on their own perception. This applied to our conception of the relationship of an object to a particular space and greater still, how this perception was a springboard to ideas beyond the object and its immediate surrounding, and referred to the world at large. Minimalism asked us to consider how we see, how we think and how we react. The symbology of the 1950's was embedded in my consciousness early on and remains relevant today. Industrial refuse, the excess of cold war industry, are included in my art materials. But I also look to science and astronomy, the infinitesimally small and infinitely large to seek connections that bind us together in spirit if not ideology. I work on large-scale public art and studio sculpture and my works combine found objects and handmade forms to create various what if situations for a viewer to contemplate sometimes humorous, sometimes somber, but always laden with symbolism and meaning despite the reductive use of materials. Without being figurative or literal, I create a narrative through a shared understanding of cultural symbols. With manipulation of the functional uses of particular materials I create spare compositions that work to depict a rich account of personal and historical events. I received an MFA from CSU Fullerton and maintain a studio in San Pedro, California. I have had over thirty-three solo and sixty-five group exhibitions in the U.S. and abroad for museums and galleries and city, state and federal arts agencies. I have received two National Endowment for the Arts fellowships, the Hand Hollow Arts Fellowship, and an AIA Award of Excellence. I have been honored as a visiting artist and guest at numerous university forums and I am currently serving as Board President for the Advisory Board for the University Arts Museum, CSU Long Beach, CA and a member of the Los Angeles Cultural Affairs Public Art Advisory Board.

  • Circle Drawing: 10 Layers
    By Carali McCall
    Located in London, GB
Circle Drawing: 10 Layers, graphite on paper with gouache, gold and silver, by Carali McCall (2019). Consisting of a collection of durational-drawing artworks in which McCall draws with graphite on paper for hours at a stretch, these time-based works have been compiled and then carefully measured to explore the depth and sculptural means of drawing materials. Each layer is hand-cut in the shape of a circle, unveiling and superseding the work that came before. As cutaways, excitingly, this new work advances the elaboration of McCall’s contemporary art practice. In new condition. The artwork has been recently framed in walnut with non-reflective museum glass. Signed by the artist on the rear of the work. About the Artist: Carali McCall is an emerging artist whose works are internationally recognised. A Canadian born in 1981, she is based in London, UK. McCall was awarded a PhD from Central Saint Martins, University of the Arts, London, and her work is featured in the upcoming publication by Bloomsburg Publishing, 'Performance Drawing: New Practices since the 1960s'. A finalist in the 2017 Jerwood Drawing Prize, McCall’s work is currently touring the United Kingdom and is situated in private and public collections curated alongside artworks by Picasso and Damien Hirst. • Carali McCall, Work no. 1 (Circle Drawing) Gold/Red, 2hours 24minutes, 2018
    By Carali McCall
    Located in London, GB
'Work no. 1 (Circle Drawing), Gold/Red, 2hours 24minutes, 2018’ graphite on 315 gsm Heritage Fine Art Paper by Carali McCall (born 1981). McCall began her ‘Circle Drawing' artworks in 2004 where she focuses on the durational element and physical process of drawing. Using graphite on paper she draws her full arm's length in a continuous circular motion to the point of complete exhaustion. During this physically demanding process, her position and ability to extend the arm diminishes to the extent she can no longer hold the graphite. McCall quotes, 'an important aim is to maintain a constant and continuous visible line that embodies time and energy. While performing, painfully, my entire body is noticeably putting effort into the drawing.' This intense action and durational element often cause the paper to fatigue and rip, which is often identified as her distinctive trademark. In McCall’s new addition to the series, materials such as Gold and Gouache are used to treat the surface and bring another layer of reference to important art historical processes. The combination of these new materials and grand scale of this practice, make McCall’s work particularly striking. • Blue & Grey Green Plan: Abstract Geometric Framed Painting in Cool Toned Palette
    By Donise English
    Located in Hudson, NY
Abstract geometric painting with a cool toned palette of green, blue, and grey with accents of black and white against a sea foam green colored acrylic wash background "Blue and Grey Green Plan" made by Hudson Valley artists, Donise English, in 2022 Graphite, colored pencil, and acrylic painting on vellum 24 x 18 inches unframed, 31 x 25 x 1.5 with an 8-ply white mat, non-glare plexi, and simple black moulding Signed, verso Excellent condition and ready to hang This abstract geometric painting on vellum was made by Hudson Valley based artist, Donise English, in 2022. The composition begins with a blue green toned background of acrylic wash. A grid of box-like patterns in sky blue, green, grey, and black with white line work are stacked to create an irregular shape or an "imagined city grid", says the artist. The painting on vellum is complemented by a simple black frame with an 8-ply white mat, non-glare plexi, and wire backing. It's in excellent condition and ready to hang. About the artist: Donise English emphasizes lines, grids, and fields of subtle color to evoke imagined places and invented structures. While precise lines and straight angles are often associated with themes in architecture and urban planning designs, English conveys a geometric motif guided by intuition rather than a ruler. Variations on grids retain flaws and unmistakable traces of the artists’ hand; her style of draftsmanship shies away from intellectualism and instead makes her compositions feel very personal. A central checkerboard formation floats over a ground of pastel color or washes of grey or cream. Each design is intensely intricate, incorporating gouache, acrylic, pen, graphite, ink and colored pencil. The artist recently retired from her decades career teaching at Marist College and is now devoted full time to her art making. Artist Statement: My work is about the way visual diagrams present information that describes how something is made or the way it is. I am interested in drawing and collaging multiple layers of information that refer abstractly to maps, architectural drawings and blueprints or patterns and structures found in such things as roller coasters, power lines and fences. I use gouache and collaged paper in a series of layers that are a visual and ideological response to the previous layer to define my pictorial space. For each piece I create a set of rules to follow about the use of a limited palette, a grid format, opacity of paper and whether a piece may include curving lines or maintain a rectilinear structure.
