Anselm Feuerbach (attr.)
German Nude Figurative Drawing 19th century pencil white chalk paper

half of the 19th

About the Item

On the left side a small flying putto is lifting up his arms in a movement that, together with the pose of the lady in center, seems recalling a scene of dance. The drawing is, presumably, the preliminary study for a painting and it can be ascribed to the catalogue of the German painter Anselm Feuerbach. The curvy model, immortalized in a very gracious and sinuous position, shows the typical details of the female characters favored by the artist, as we can see in the “Amazons”, in the “Bacchanal” or in the “Romans in their Decadence”. A similar lady-with exotic physiognomy and a vest around the hips that leave the breast out-can also be found in the two paintings dedicated to the Persian poet Hafis. The dark paper and the drawing style seems confirming the attribution also from the technique point of view. Anselm Feuerbach was born in an humanistic environment: he was, in fact, the nephew of the philosopher Ludwig Feuerbach, active exponent of the Hegelian left, while his dad taught Philology and Archaeology at the University of Freiburg. The life of the artist was characterized by continuous changes and he tavlled a lot through Italy (Rome, Venice, Florence) and Germany (Heidelberg, Nuremberg, Berlin). He also spent some times in Paris-as a pupil and collaborator of Thomas Couture,-and in Wien, teaching at the Academy. He was apreciated by important artists of the time (for example, Arnold Bocklin and Julius Allegeyer, with whom he also founded a Singing quartet) and aby the aristocracy (like the Count Shack-who commissioned him lots of works-and the prince of Baden-who ordered him a replica of “The Assumption of the Virgin” by Titian). He received important public commissions, like the ceiling of the Wien Academy representing “The Fall of Giants” and the portrait of Ludwig King of Bavaria for the Chamber of Commerce of Nuremberg. He was devoted to the study of the old masters and to historical themes; he often used as model Anna Risi (who already was portrayed by Leighton) and Lucia Brunacci, sharing with both of them a sentimental relation, too.
