About the Item

The proposed attribution for this drawing in brown ink on paper is the name of the painter and academician of the Tuscan-Roman neoclassical cohort Francesco Nenci (Anghiari, April 19, 1782-Siena, March 4, 1850). In this case, linking the paper to Roman works from the years 1812 - 1814 onward marked not surprisingly by ancient and Roman history subjects, and other heroic subjects for which review and research is not complete. The episode illustrated here seems to relate back to a sacrificial and propitiatory scene for the Roman Republican-era masses known as suovetaurilia, present since the Homeric sources and recounted in some passages of Homer's poem as the sacrifice of a pig, a ram, and a bull suggested by the soothsayer Tiresias to Ulysses to appease Poseidon and again the same sacrificial rite featuring Ulysses in the court of Alcinous king of the Phaeacians. Interestingly, among other things, it was precisely this theme that was to be the last major grand ducal commission given to Nenci for the central fresco on the vault in the dining room of Leopold II of Lorraine in the Palazzina della Meridiana in the Pitti Palace between 1834 and 1835.
