About the Item

"The Artists Wife" Realistic Nude Woman in Conté on Paper by Garth Benton Detailed nude drawing by Paul "Garth" Garfield Benton (American, 1940-2012). Portrait of Christine Rosamond Presco (Rosamond) the artist. A woman sits with her knees bent, one pulled in to her chest. Her arms are wrapped around one leg. Her head is down, forehead resting on her right forearm. Of particular note is the detail in her hair and the delicate shading of her legs and torso. Signed and dated "Garth Benton - '83" in the lower right corner Presented in a copper colored frame with a white mat. Frame size: 29.25"H x 33.25"W Image size: 20.5"H x 24.5"W Internationally recognized artist Garth Benton, a native of Los Angeles, California, was born in 1940. Benton was married to actress Harlee McBride and later to the highly successful artist Christine Rosamond Presco, whose paintings made into posters were everywhere in the 1970s. He was a third cousin of well-known regional artist Thomas Hart Benton. In 1981, he moved to Carmel and studied art UCLA and Art Center College of Design in Pasadena. Rather than pursue his own unique style, Benton chose to emulate the art of many different periods. “My style is not to have my own style. Instead, I assimilate characteristics of the period I’m depicting,” he says. “Here at the Getty, the murals are part of the ambiance. Nobody is supposed to say they are better than the art in the museum,” said Benton. One of his best-known public works was a set of murals for the J. Paul Getty Museum in Malibu. The murals are re-creations of paintings discovered in a country house near Pompeii, now in the collection of New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art. For years, Benton maintained a second home and studio in Headland, Alabama, located just outside Dothan, where examples of his work can be found in a private residence in Dothan. Benton was also featured in an exhibition at the Wiregrass Museum of Art in Dothan, Alabama. Fine art connoisseurs have described Benton as one of the top five muralists in the world became well known for executing museum-quality murals. One of his best-known public works was for the J. Paul Getty Museum in Malibu, California. Note worthy clients who commissioned work by Benton include former President and First Lady Gerald and Betty Ford, Dolores and Bob Hope, Barbara Streisand, Carol Burnett, Dean Martin, Ann and Gordon Getty, and Aaron Spelling. Bold nude pastel drawing by Albert Hutson (American, 1923-1994). A woman is reclined on a soft red surface, leaning up against a yellow pillow. The model is skillfully sketched, with quick but confident marks. Hutson has captured the character of the model in her expression and posture, both of which appear relaxed and natural. Al Hutson retired from military service in 1974, moved to San Francisco, and enrolled in art school at the California College of Arts and Crafts. In 1978 he earned his BFA degree with distinction in drawing and painting. His work as a figurative artist was in the medium of pastel drawing, and he had an intense and abiding affinity for works on paper. Signed, dated, and titled twice in the lower right corner ("Al Hutson Danielle 89") Presented in a new off-white mat with foamcore backing. Mat size: Paper size: 19.75"H x 25.5"W Albert L. Hutson (American, 1923-1994) had two careers: first as a professional military officer, and second as an artist and member of the Board of the Graphic Arts Council in San Francisco. He was born in 1923 in Portsmouth, Virginia, into a family with a long military tradition. His father and maternal grandfather were Annapolis graduates, and his paternal grandfather served in the Civil War. Colonel Hutson graduated from Staunton Military Academy in 1941 shortly after World War II began. He later earned an undergraduate degree in history from the University of Nebraska in the late 1960s. As a young second lieutenant in World War II, he served with the First Armored Division in the Italian Campaign, starting with the Battle of Anzio, and participated in the liberation of Rome. His interest in art began at this time when his commanding officer introduced him to Italian art. Al Hutson retired from military service in 1974, moved to San Francisco, and enrolled in art school at the California College of Arts and Crafts. In 1978 he earned his BFA degree with distinction in drawing and painting.
