About the Item
A black and white figure study of a standing nude male, from 1951, by artist Harold Haydon. Artwork size:
Archivally matted to 24" x 20". Provenance: Estate of the Artist. Estate stamped on reverse.
Harold Emerson Haydon was born in Fort William, Ontario, Canada in 1909. Haydon came to Chicago with his family in 1917 and became a naturalized American citizen in 1941. He attended the University of Chicago Lab School and the University of Chicago, where he earned a Bachelor’s Degree and Master’s Degree in Philosophy. He also studied painting at the Art Institute of Chicago. Haydon was a long-time Professor of Art at the University of Chicago, teaching from 1944-1975. He became an instructor at the Art Institute of Chicago from 1975-1981. Haydon also taught as an Adjunct Professor of Fine Arts at Indiana University from 1975-1982. In addition, Haydon served as the noted art critic of the Chicago Sun-Times from 1963-1985. He died in Chicago in 1994.

Harold Haydon

It predates the artist's full immersion, years later into torn and re-pasted collages, using ripped previous drawings and paper-based materials from media. Possibly exhibited in May 8-June 1,1973 at Alan Stone Gallery entitled Erotica, which lists Lachaise as one of the artists exhibited.
Part of small group of drawings of the male nude, done late in the artist's life, many of which are in museums (MMA, FAMSF, Whitney, Yale, Princeton).
Almost identical to the Lachaise drawing in the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, which is the same size and depicts the same model. (see photo)
Very similar to the smaller Lachaise drawing in the Whitney Museum of American Art (Accession number 32.2).
The Metropolitan Museum has a Lachaise male nude drawing with one arm upraised (Accession Number: 68.91.1)
