His mother died when he was age three. His father was affluent and owned real estate. Boris grew up in a privileged environment. He studied architecture and then fine arts at the Imperial Academy of Art in Petrograd, Russia (now Saint Petersburg). Following the revolution in 1917 and its aftermath, Boris immigrated to Boston to live with his brother. In the 1920’s, his stylized, Art Deco inspired sculptures, lithographs, and paintings proved to be popular among the American elite. He exhibited frequently, holding his first solo exhibition in Boston, 1920. In the following years, Boris exhibited in New York at Marie Sterner Gallery, Jacques Seligmann Galleries and Wildenstein and Company. He lived in Paris from 1926 to 1932 where he befriended Joseph Hecht, and was exposed to the works of Pablo Picasso, Ossip Zadkine, Contantin Brancusi and Aristide Maillol. In 1932 he returned to America where he became a citizen later in the decade. Lovet-Lorski exhibited in the United States, South America, Europe and Asia. He was a member of the Society of Independent Artists (New York), the National Academy of Design (New York), and the Lotos Club (New York), as well as several Parisian salons. His work is in the permanent collections of numerous museums including the Musée Luxembourg, Bibliotèque Nationale, and the Petit Palais in France, the British Museum in London, the Metropolitan Museum in New York, the National Gallery in Washington, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. (A more extensive list of his works in museums follows) He is considered one of the most successful and recognized sculptors of his generation. His creative influence can be seen in many of his contemporary artists. He died in Los Angeles in 1973. These figures reveal a spiritual sensuality as he strives to attain a symbol of the earth and universe endowed with musical values. This is the Original 1969 drawing of the two nude figures that appear on the Jimi Hendrix Spring 1969 concert poster. It is as much of a collectors item as it is a fine work of art. This was given to Hendrix to approve the art for the final poster. You can see images of the full 1969 poster in this listing. David Byrd referred to these women as "Moon Maidens" The art is Pencil on iridescent tracing paper, Matted with it's original "Electric Purple" matt, as done by David Byrd. The original drawing of this full image was used for the 1969 Spring U.S concert tour and it was also used as the image for Hendrix's press kit in 1969 which was given to concert promotors to advertise the concert. David met with Jimi to approve his original drawing. The art measures 7 x 8", and the matted and framed art measures approx. 15x16". René-Paris Castaing, winner of the Grand Prix de Rome in 1924, left a large body of work, both sacred and secular. Many churches in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques, in South-West France still bear witness to the diversity of his talent. In 1942, he began a major decoration project for the Château de Diusse, in the north-east of the county, including an allegory of the four seasons. The vigorous pastel we are presenting here is a study for Spring, depicted as Flore undressing. This commission was a veritable swan song for the artist, who died a year later at the age of 47. 1. René-Marie Castaing, the great inter-war painter in Pau René-Marie Castaing was born in Pau on December 16th 1896. His father, Joseph Castaing, was also a painter: he was the official portraitist of Pau's high society, which was particularly cosmopolitan at the end of the century, when many rich foreigners spent the winter in Pau, taking advantage of the mild weather to enjoy an outdoor lifestyle punctuated by hunting, horse ridings and golf. René-Marie Castaing was admitted to the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris in April 1920 and entered the studio of Paul-Albert Laurens (1870-1934). In 1924, he was awarded the First Grand Prix de Rome for Painting, which earned him a stay at the Villa Médicis for more than three years. He then returned to Pau in 1928, where he lived until his death. Castaing's work is marked by the academic tradition, in which drawing plays as important a role as painting. Although his drawings are often sketches that help to set up large painted compositions, they stand as independent artworks in which the artist fully expresses the vivacity of his talent. Castaing was a fervent Christian and religious painting played an essential part in his work, as shown by the decorations he created for the churches of Bizanos, Borce, Bidache and Salies-de-Béarn. The painter also created several secular decorations, such as that for the dining room of the Villa Saint-Basil's in Pau in 1935, and the Hunting at the Albret’s time commissioned in 1940 by the Prefecture of Pau. The décor created in 1942-1943 for the Château de Diusse, a mansion located north-east of Pau, was his last large-scale décor, as the painter died shortly after its completion on December 8th 1943. 2. Description of the drawing Our pastel depicts an eminently secular theme: Spring is embodied by Flore, crouching on the ground with one knee touching the ground. French artist Georges Lucien Guyot (1885 - 1972) signed this charming woman nude study. This painting features a lovely design of a woman getting out of the bath and wiping with a towel. Only a few lines in charcoal and red chalk or sanguine mark the silhouette and posture and capture the model's expression. The red color emphasizes the color of the skin and imbues the lascivious movement. The sketches of the bath towel are only suggested, but it gives the whole thing a lot of softness and an incredible illusion of movement. Signed on the bottom left corner: Georges Lucien Guyot. The artist used a technique named "sanguine," or red chalk or crayon. The drawing has a blood-red, reddish, or flesh coloration. It has been popular for centuries for drawing employed by 15th and 16th Century artists such as the great masters like Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, and Raphael. The drawing is ornate with a contemporary wood frame with a red and yellow deep-textured pattern and an off-white matte with acrylic glass protection. EMIL GANSO "SEATED NUDE" CHARCOAL WITH COLOR WASH, SIGNED AMERICAN, C.1930 21.5 X 15.5 INCHES Biography from Butler Institute of American Art Emil Ganso 1885-1941 Ganso was born in Germany in 1895. At age 14, he apprenticed to a baker and then worked his way to America when he was 17. He worked in bakeries in Scranton, Pennsylvania; and Cincinnati and Akron, Ohio. By 1916, Ganso was out of a job, and living the life of a bohemian in New York City, sometimes on less than 30 cents a week. In 1921, Ganso painted on a realistic nude on a bedsheet and was forced by the police to remove it from an exhibition. The bedsheet with the painting was later stolen. He soon had a job baking again at $140 a month, and with time to spare for painting and study. Ganso quit baking in 1925 when a New York dealer game him financial backing of $50 a week. Ganso has prospered from his art ever since. His work is in over 15 American museums, and the Print Club of Cleveland awarded him a $500 purchase prize for a wood engraving.
