Chinese Erotic Pillow Book Scroll, c. 1850

Mid-19th Century

About the Item

A pillow book was meant to teach a young bride about the art of lovemaking. This rare museum-quality 19th century example is composed of 12 masterfully painted erotic scenes depicting people of the Ming era, a golden time in China, when customs and mentalities were more free. Each scene commands a wide range of emotions and is rich with attire, furnishings, and gardens, offering insight into fashions of the time. The paper scroll is mounted on silk and framed.
