Head of a Bearded Man in Profile, Wearing an Officer's Jacket
Black chalk and white chalk on prepared blue paper, 45 × 30.5 cm
Provenance:
Private collection
This remarkable drawing, executed in black chalk with white chalk highlights on prepared blue paper, clearly belongs to the tradition of German realism at the end of the 19th century, following the aesthetic lineage of Adolph von Menzel (1815–1905), one of the undisputed masters of drawing in Imperial Germany. Although unsigned, the work demonstrates a technical mastery and sensitivity characteristic of the rigorous training given in the circles of Ludwig von Herterich (1856–1932), or from the Leibl-Kreis—a group of artists influenced by Wilhelm Leibl, a staunch proponent of direct observation from nature.
The portrait, rendered in profile, exudes a quiet strength. The treatment of volume—particularly in the flowing beard and deeply etched facial lines—reveals a precise and demanding gaze, striving to capture the truth of the sitter rather than to idealize him. The rendering of textures—coarse hair, dense curls, the fabric of the jacket—demonstrates technical virtuosity placed entirely at the service of striking realism. The discreet application of white chalk structures the light and enhances the sculptural relief.
The use of blue paper is not incidental: it allows for a subtle play of shadow and light, reinforcing the sense of form and connecting the work to the academic tradition that Menzel refined to an exceptional degree. At the crossroads of naturalism and the bourgeois idealism characteristic of Wilhelmine culture, this portrait evokes both the concerns of historical painting and the intimacy of the study portrait.
This sheet was likely the result of an academic exercise, in which the student aimed to match the descriptive rigor of his master. It immerses us in the atmosphere of the great academies of Munich or Berlin, where drawing was still regarded as the essential foundation of any serious pictorial practice.

Provenance: Private collection
This delicate drawing belongs to the Lombard school and was created by an artist working under the influence of Leonardo da Vinci, very likely within his close circle. The profile recalls the Apostle at the far left of The Last Supper, and may even derive directly from Leonardo’s own compositional sketches for the mural (Gallerie dell’Accademia, Venice, inv. 254).
While Leonardo’s version carries a profound religious and political message, this sheet reveals a more naturalistic interpretation. The precise outlines and the controlled hatching distinguish it from the master’s hand, yet the subtle modeling of the face in red chalk shows clear echoes of Leonardo’s refined technique.
