Howard Margolis
Howard Margolis is known for his somewhat primitive or naive forms created in a modernist style. He was a young man with a complex talent and message. He was referred to as a “neo-expressionist” with references to the stylistic and emotional content of the work of Munch, the horrendous primitive of Dubuffet and mystic, child-like images of Klee, and Abstract Expressionist concerns of neo-figurative painting. Margolis’s works were often genre scenes but occasionally included random animals. He was an artist, musician, father, teacher, mentor and social worker. Margolis’s life and spirit are memorialized at the Berkeley Zen Center.
