About the Item

Karl HUBBUCH (1891-1979) Thoughtful young woman, circa 1920-30 Pen and ink, pink colored pencil on paper Stamp of the Karl Hubbuch estate in the upper left corner 14,5 x 14 inch German artist and figure of the New Objectivity, Karl Hubbuch was born in Karlsruhe in 1891. He received his first artistic training at the Academy of Fine Arts in 1908, where he became friends with Georg Scholz and Rudolf Schlichter. He moved to Berlin in 1912 and joined the Institute of Applied Arts (Kunstgewerbeschulen) in the studio of Emil Orlik (1870-1932) alongside his friend George Grosz. He was mobilized during the First World War and remained in convalescence for some time before being offered a position as assistant lithographer at the Academy of Fine Arts in his native city. Very involved, he was appointed professor of drawing and then director of the painting class in 1928. Ranked among the "degenerates", he was dismissed in 1933 by the Nazi regime before teaching again after the Second World War. In the 1920s, the young artist frequented groups of artists linked to the revolutionary left and politically committed against the Weimar Republic, such as the Novembergruppe and the Rote Gruppe. In 1925, he participated in the historic exhibition Neue sachlichkeit (New Objectivity) organized by Gustav Friedrich Hartlaub at the Kunsthalle in Mannheim. Hartlaub brought together a heterogeneous group of about thirty artists, including Otto Dix and Max Beckmann. This event inaugurated a new sensibility that progressively broke with the hallucinatory expressionism of the pre-war period, which was succeeded by an art of coldly objective observation in which the role of color was more subject to that of drawing, which was more analytical. The drawings of the New Objectivity artists, whose aesthetic is partly based on the power of the line, seem to concentrate the essence of their art. Karl Hubbuch, a prolific draughtsman and engraver, produced satirical works tinged with social and political criticism in a realistic style that revealed a precise sense of detail and physiognomy. He focuses on recurring themes borrowed from everyday reality, which are mainly related to the opposition between the bourgeois and rural worlds as well as to the image of women. Karl Hubbuch's style is marked by an incisive, concise line, which is often based on a brutal observation. The study of a figure that we propose, sketched in a few lines, highlights a precise body language and manages to capture a certain sensuality close to life. We find the use of colored pencils in some of the artist's drawings, as is the case for our sheet where a discreet touch of pink pencil highlights the model's lips. In the 1960s, the renewed interest in figurative art drew attention to his work and led to a broader reappraisal of the New Objectivity artists. With his straightforward painting technique and objective approach to subject matter, Karl Hubbuch's paintings and drawings are considered icons of this period.
