Mike Cockrill
The Modernist

2000

About the Item

I’m telling stories. And the story and iconography support a framework that says – growing up in middle-class America. We lived this way. In a world of sentimental family portraits done by an aunt, and bad Rembrandt reproductions, in modest suburban houses on green manicured lawns that were supposed to connote The Good Life. American Utopia.

East meets West in this charming illustration where a female American Illustrator paints a scene of two jovial Japanese youths in a semi-Japanese style. Clara Miller Burd was a brilliant female illustrator trained in the academic tradition. This work shows her deep mastery of how to render form properly.
