N. Grosdovv
Portrait of a Lady, Charcoal Drawing, 20th Century Russian

1935

About the Item

Charcoal , signed lower right and dated 'Paris 1935' Image size: 25 x 19 inches (63.5 x 48 cm) Original oak frame An accomplished example of Russian art from the mid 20th century. The majority of these artists left their country after the Revolution of 1917, going through Germany or Belgium, before settling in Paris, a city dreamed of by numerous Russian painters of the time who saw in it a place of liberty and ease of living. Paris was indeed the “Capital of the Arts,” the nexus of avant-gardes that followed each other from the Realism of Courbet through to the Narrative Figuration of the 1970s. These avant-garde creators, which Paris welcomed, came from all over the world to study, create, and display their work. The art that they created became international and universal, so much so that they were grouped together under the name “School of Paris,” a movement that erased borders and national references. “There are no foreigners in art,” wrote Brancusi in 1922, underlining the fact that it was impossible to distinguish, in that school, that which the foreign artists borrowed from the French and that which the French borrowed from the foreigners. A common aesthetic— rejecting academicism, with an abstract tendency— was born from artists of all nationalities, many of whom did not even speak the same language.

Self Portrait, Charcoal on Paper, 20th Century British Drawing
By William Dring
Located in London, GB
Charcoal on paper Image size: 4 1/2 x 4 1/4 inches (11.5 x 10.75 cm) Mounted with a contemporary style frame This is a somewhat haunting self-portrait by William Dring, crafted in charcoal. Here, Dring presents himself through dark shadow and bright highlights, looking out directly at the viewer with a serious gaze. Although the Dring has been economical in the use of his marks we are still given plenty of information and can identify the energy in which the strokes of charcoal must have been placed onto the surface. William Dring Dring was born with the forenames Dennis William, but was known colloquially as John. He was the brother of the artist James Dring. He married the painter Grace Elizabeth...
