Paul Lemagny (1905-1977) Selfportrait of the artist, signed in the lower middle charcoal on paper 30.5 x 22;5 cm In good condition; Framed : 47 x 39 cm (some minor damages to the frame) A very sensitive and modern self-portrait of the young artist. Paul Lemagny was born into a family from Sivry-la-Perche, the son of a forest ranger. His early years were spent in a country and forest environment to which he remained deeply attached throughout his life and which marked his work. His first success came in 1928 when he won the second Grand Prix de Rome for engraving with Salambô. This was followed by several awards at the Salon des artistes français. He drew landscapes that were dear to him (Sivry-la-Perche), or that he discovered during his travels. During this period, he rubbed shoulders with masters such as Jean-Louis Forain, whose varnishes he prepared for his engravings, Georges Rouault and Marc Chagall, whose engravings he retouched for the luxury editions. On 13 October 1930 he married Léonie Leloup (1900-1997), whose father was also a forest ranger and who, like him, had spent her childhood in contact with nature. They had three children, including Jean-Claude Lemagny (1931), who became curator of photographs at the Bibliothèque nationale de France. In 1934, he finally won the first Grand Prix de Rome for engraving with Orestes pursued by the Erinyes, whose composition and graphic quality remain a model of the classical style. He then stayed at the Villa Medici in Rome from 1935 to 1938. During this period, he drew many landscapes and portraits of the purest classicism. His love of nature led him to make long peregrinations in the Roman countryside and the Apennines, and he recorded the remarkable landscapes on photographic glass plates. In the 1950s, the influence of surrealism was felt in Lemagny's work, and the classical drawing from nature was followed by a drawing of the imaginary. Considering that all forms are in nature, he let his imagination run wild with the most improbable shapes. He produced numerous prints and very large wall engravings. For example, at the Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Le Havre, rebuilt in the 1950s by the architect Otello Zavaroni, he engraved a phantasmagorical underwater world on a 200 m2 wall. Other mural engravings followed, in Rennes (Faculty of Law), Bar-le-Duc (Ecole Normale), and Versailles (nursery school). Finally, in 1956, Lemagny drew and engraved a portrait of Pablo Picasso for the book Témoignage by Jean Cocteau. This work of great purity is particularly significant of the evolution of his drawing. For the first time, the volume of the face is given solely by the pure line, without drop shadows or trompe-l'oeil, heralding the evolution to come. In the early 1960s, serious health problems forced Lemagny into inactivity, a period he used to carry out a profound introspection and an uncompromising critique of his work. The result was a move away from classical figurative drawing and an approach to so-called "non-figurative" drawing. A new conception of drawing was born, to which he devoted the last 25 years of his life. He dissected the classical work made from nature and denied it any form of intrusion into his art, forcing himself to "think of nothing in front of the blank sheet of paper", refusing any a priori subject and allowing himself to be guided only by the balance of forms, spaces, rhythms, lights and colours in black and white that follow one another on his sheet. He redefines the notions of space, colour and light in a non-figurative art, avoiding the false facilities of trompe-l'oeil. "It must sing", he said. This conception led him to develop a body of work consisting of several hundred abstract drawings, made with Indian ink on Japanese paper, drawings that are not well known but that made a major contribution to the development of abstract drawing. Exhibitions at the Montpellier museum under the authority of Xavier Dejean and with the publication of a catalogue at the Maison Mansart in Paris have enabled us to measure the extent of this work. The October 1988 issue of Empreinte was devoted to him. Paul Lemagny died in Versailles on 18 July 1977 and was buried in Sivry-la-Perche.
