About the Item
"Fading Light" is pencil on paper measuring 12" tall by 9" wide. It's very sound structurally, with a figure composed against a classic pedestal (scrolls suggest a Greek Ionic column) – in fact these are wild shapes and colors in a formal arrangement. The artist's principal questions and conditions are all here: an artist's journey developing their own work in the face of art history, the humanities, time. And time only runs out. A setting sun in the painting, the possibility of different faces in the painting – arguably an ode to art and art making, posterity where it can be found. Vanitas.
"Fading Light" appeared in a group exhibition curated by Jacqueline Cedar at Good Naked Gallery, Brooklyn, NY, Summer 2020.

Peter Schenck lives and paints in Brooklyn, NY. He received his BFA from Boston University (2006) and his MFA from the University of Pennsylvania (2009). The artists most obviously in Schenck’s pantheon are Picasso, Philip Guston, and Peter Saul. Their patriarchal power is noteworthy in the context of the Oedipal eyeballs repeated from one painting to the next; Schenck’s work manifests the anxiety of influence, but the ecstasy as well. The fear of painting in the wake of such magnificent and terrible fathers is palpable, but no less so is Schenck’s obvious delight in adapting their discoveries to his own purposes. His works demonstrate his mastery over his idiosyncratic cartoonish language, his personal world of symbols, and his palette, which is all his own. TRANSFIGURATION is a new watercolor on Fabriano paper by Fleur Thesmar. The artwork measures 30x22", and is a structured composition in tones of green, blue, umber, rose and teal. Bordering on abstraction and figuration, a landscape of trees and water and sky appears to open up symmetrically, possibly revealing a spirit.
From Fleur Thesmar – "Inspired by a mathematical model, I painted this abstraction which slowly took on the form of a person. The shivering brushstrokes create a textured relief, while the person seems to emerge from and recede into the background."
Having moved her family from France to America, artist Fleur Thesmar closely observed the changes in her world – from the seemingly obvious such as surrounding landscapes, the light of day and weather, the flowers, trees and shorelines – to the smaller less obvious shifts, such as how one behaves in a new world, in a new home, how one cherishes certain belongings and certain memories.
Her artistic practice is borne out of that close observation and shift in perspective, and has led to a number of successful gallery shows in the U.S. and internationally.
