About the Item

R. Lang Thomas (British, 20th century) Patricia, 1947 Graphite on paper Signed and dated lower right 34.4 x 26.8 cm.; (within frame) 56 x 47.5 cm. Provenance: The Chelsea Art Society; Private Collection, United Kingdom. Exhibition history: The Chelsea Art Society, 1947 In attractive side profile, a young lady rests her gaze at a gentle distance, her lips pursed with modish concentration. The title inscribed to a Chelsea Art Society label verso gives her name as ‘Patricia’. Elegant shading casts a harsh light familiar of contemporary fashion photography, with gentle hatching shaping her distinctively rounded features. A modish subtlety is exuded with the suggestion of a dark lipstick, and a large waved hairstyle. She wears a scoop neck jacket with ribbed trim, and a round pendant earring. The Chelsea Art Society label describes the artist’s address as 2a Joubert Mansions, Jubilee Place, London, SW3, and provides a price of 50 guineas for the work. The drawing was presumably exhibited with the Society during the year of execution, 1947, and was likely the second of those exhibited by Thomas that year. The drawing is within a period frame manufactured by Bourlet & Sons Ltd.
