About the Item

An extremely fine and reflective watercolour portrait of a seating lady, by the Victorian listed artist Fanny Mearns (fl.1870-1881). The artist has a distinctly delicate technique, using light palettes to depict thoughtful and ponderous interior scenes. Here, the reader reflects upon the day's news, in the farmhouse kitchen of an ancient dwelling, suggesting a focus on the passing of time. Well-presented in an elaborate washline mount and thin distressed wooden frame, as shown. Signed. On wove.

Late 19th Century Watercolour - A Quiet Moment
Located in Corsham, GB
A truly beautiful portrait of an older woman taking a quiet moment to read a book at her bureau. She is clearly a woman of high standing shown in her richly textured clothes: satin ribbons, lace shawl and a velvet bodice and skirts. Her tight ringletted hair was a style popular in the 1880s but as she is an older woman this is probably a style she carried through her life, dating the painting around 1880 instead. This painting captures the serene and intensely personal act of solitary reading with gentle aplomb using a watercolour brush...
