From 1912 to 1916 he attended the Rouse Art School in Tarboro. He moved to Pennsylvania in 1918, and attended the Pennsylvania State College (1921-22) and the Carnegie Institute of Technology in Pittsburgh (1925-26). Between 1920 and 1931 he spent summers in Woodstock, New York, and studied chiefly with Albert Heckman (1893-1971).
