Sam Falls
Untitled (California Palm Rubbing 10)

2014

About

This unique work on paper is an excellent example of Falls’ longstanding environmental approach to art-making and his fascination with the impact of natural phenomena, such as light, rain, wind, and the passing of time. Falls, in his own words, creates artworks that are "formed over time, rather than captured in an instant.” For this work in particular, Falls used multi-colored pencils to record the surfaces of various palm fronds onto paper. Utilizing the same process as one would to create a grave rubbing, Falls recalls the transient nature of life even for the most insignificant organism as well as the natural cycle of life and death to which all living things belong. "Untitled (California Palm Rubbing 10)" is framed.
