Zachari Logan
Forest No. 1, after Tom

2022

About the Item

This drawing by Zachari Logan is a self portrait made with colored pencil on Mylar depicting the artist nude immersed in the foliage of the forest. Forest No. 1, After Tom 2022 Accompanied by certificate of authenticity signed by the artist Colored pencil on Mylar 9 x 6.5 inches “This drawing is a tribute to Tom of Finland, whose work has long-influenced my own in relation to drawing, the construction of space, and self-portraiture. In Finland’s compositions, images of men in the landscape—logging, foresting, and relaxing (together, naked, clothed, alone, in pairs and in groups) had a profound effect on my own thinking about the queer body represented. I see no separation between land and body—we are nature. The queer body is not unnatural (that is a false dichotomy, often espoused by religious and conservative world views). Finland’s renderings of bodies in nature are for me a rupture of the largely European tradition of only representing male nudity in relation to heteronormativity. —Zachari Logan, August 2022 Canadian artist Zachari Logan works mainly with large-scale drawing, ceramics, and installation practices. Exploring the intersections between identity, memory, and place, Logan re-wilds his body as an expression of queerness. Logan has exhibited widely throughout North America, Europe, and Asia, and is found in private and public collections worldwide, including the National Gallery of Canada, Art Gallery of Ontario, Remai Modern, McMichael Canadian Art Collection, Leslie-Lohman Museum, Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art, 21c Museum Hotels, TD Bank, and Thetis Foundation, among others. Logan has attended many residencies including Vienna’s Museums Quartier MQ21 Program, the International Studio & Curatorial Program in Brooklyn, Wave Hill Botanical Gardens Winter Workspace Program in the Bronx, and was artist in residence at the Tom Thomson Shack at the McMichael Gallery. Logan has worked collaboratively with several celebrated artists including Ross Bleckner and Sophie Calle, and his work has been featured in many publications worldwide including BBC Culture, The Boston Globe, The Globe and Mail, Border Crossings, Huffington Post, Canadian Art, and Hyperallergic, to name a few. Logan’s recent projects include the two-person exhibition “Shadow of The Sun: Ross Bleckner & Zachari Logan” at Wave Hill Botanical Gardens in the Bronx; “Wildflower,” a solo exhibition at the Canadian High Commission in London UK; and “Ghost Meadows” at Remai Modern in Saskatoon, Canada. Logan’s recent exhibition “Remembrance” opened at the Peabody Essex Museum in Salem, Massachusetts in the spring of 2022.
