About the Item
Ewuare (King) is an original painting by Barnabas Macauley. Ewuare (King) was created with Mixed Media (Charcoal, Acrylic, and Pencil) on a primed 24W by 30H inches canvas.
Known as Oba (king) Ewuare the Great, Ewuare Ogidigan, who was originally named Ogun, ruled the kingdom of Benin from 1440 until his death in 1473. Ewuare had a reputation for being a brave and wise man. During his reign he expanded the territory of Benin to include 201 towns and villages.
Under Ewuare, the capital city of Benin was well organized and supported a large population. He built many roads and constructed nine gateways to Benin. Oral traditions extol Ewuare as a clever magician, doctor, and warrior who helped to make Benin one of the largest and best-known empires of ancient West Africa.
Ewuare encouraged artistic expression, particularly ivory and wood carving. He is credited as the inventor of the Eziken, a wind instrument, and is reputed to have established the Benin royal band, Ema-Ode. During his reign, the Portuguese made their earliest voyages to the West African coast and developed trade relationships with the people of Benin. The Benin people regard Oba Ewuare 1 and his reign as the yardstick for measuring all other Obas of Benin, both in prestige and achievement. They say; "Egbe Ewuare era gie Oba se"
In this Becoming series, I hope to revive our heritage as well as examine the intricacies of self-actualization, vis-a-vis drawing inspiration from the African history from the Benin and Esan perspective, contemporarily.

About Artist
Macaulay Barnabas Osagie is a self-taught Artist and a graduate of the prestigious University of Benin, Nigeria, West Africa. Hailed from Benin heritage, which is known for its rich history, culture, and traditions. Growing up, He was fascinated by esthetics as a form of expression; this propelled his journey into the world of art. His passion for art began at the age of five, scribbling images on the ground using sticks—it evolved into drawings in primary and secondary schools. He was often selected among students to represent my secondary school in various art competitions.
"Knowing that Art fuels my existence and helps me connect with the world better, in 2018, I decided to not only do art for love and relief, but to explore it professionally, and build a renowned career in the industry. One that reflects my views on societal issues and serves as an echo of hope. Determined to pay my dues, I had the privilege of working at Prince Saheed Adelakun's Olokun Art Studio in Abule-Egba, Lagos. It was there I met with other professionals. I created my first series titled "Odan Series"; which was expressed via hyperrealism. I created this series at the point when my life was in shambles; I was going through a rough phase; working on this series was my solace at the time.
"Over the years, I have created brilliant artworks using charcoal and pencil on paper and have evolved using acrylic and charcoal on canvas as my primary media of visual articulation; these works take various forms and for various purposes, all a reflection of my creativity and depth. I am drawn to figurative African contemporary art and surrealism. That is because the human mind is made up of both the conscious and the subconscious. So, I believe there's no better way to do works that speak of both other than via figurative African contemporary art and surrealism. Most of my surrealistic expressions are done via drawings using charcoal and paper as my primary mediums. I employ the mixed media approach using both charcoal and acrylic on canvas in my figurative African contemporary expressions. I love the interjection of the two opposite polar elements the dryness of charcoal and the wetness of acrylic bring. They represent the dynamism of life and how contrasting factors shape us into who we are. I love to tell stories; both the ones that are consciously relatable via contemporary works and the ones that are subconsciously relatable via surrealistic pieces. I hope to invoke thoughts and emotions through my art. I want every viewer to not just see my art but to also see themselves; my art is a mirror of who they are. One of the beauties of life is to be understood and that is exactly what I want my art to invoke in anyone. I'm interested in conversations surrounding African history, identity, evolution, leadership, and a bit of politics.

Idehen seeks to address and depict our journey of self-discovery. The journey is more important than the destination, I've often learned.
Idehen in bini, means to stand firm. To be confident in ourselves, which of course grows as we journey through various paths. Sometimes, one may hold on to arrogance if necessary because the world would often tries to enforce its projections on us. It is imperative to stand firm even as we walk across these borders of existential questions about why we are here and what we are to do.

Obehi (Hand of God)
Located in Ibadan, Oyo
Assurance. There's nothing more sane in this ever-changing world with its dynamic than assurance. Knowing that despite the frustration that sometimes comes with tackling this multifaceted world, we are in God's hands, is a comforting phenomenon.
Sometimes, we lose our way. Sometimes, we falter. Sometimes, we try. Sometimes we get it right. In all these and more, we are sure we are not entirely lost and somehow there's a profound meaning to our lives even in the chaos.
Obehi. Sometimes, It's a name that stimulates the essence and beauty of God's creation. The simplicity and complexity of His esthete in all their synergies.
Beauty and assurance.

Idia
Located in Ibadan, Oyo
Idia (Iyoba) was the mother of Esigie, the Oba of Benin who ruled from 1504 to 1550. She played a significant role in the rise and reign of her son, being described as a great warrior who fought relentlessly before and during her son's reign as the Oba (king) of the Edo people. Queen Idia was instrumental in securing the title of Oba for her son Esigie following the death of his father Oba Ozolua. To that end, she raised an army to fight off his brother Arhuaran who was supposed to be the Oba by right and tradition but was subsequently defeated in battle. Esigie’s mother became the 17th Oba of Benin.
Esigie instituted the title of iyoba (queen mother) and conferred it on his mother, along with Eguae-Iyoba (Palace of the Queen Mother). —Wikipedia
She's the epitome of courage, vision, strength, and vigor.
