About the Item
This piece is made by casting Hydrocal FGR95 (a very hard plaster) on top of an oil clay pattern. Once cured, the oil clay is removed, then paint and gold leaf are applied to the surface. The piece is hung with an aluminum z clip. A foam core pattern will be included to aid with placement and install.
"Smoke Tangles" depicts wisps of interweaving color bands contained in a black circle. This is the third piece I made using the technique casting atop oil clay. I love how the color is embossed into the smooth black surface creating visually rich surface. The gold sections absolutely radiates as it meanders overtop and around the other colors.
Ben Watkins was born in Owensboro, Kentucky in 1977. He holds a BFA from Murray State University and a MFA from Rhode Island School of Design, both degrees in furniture design. He current lives and works in Lincoln, Rhode Island. He has been exhibited nationally and is in both public and private collections.
