Brit J. Oie
Tree of Life Trilogy, Original Painting

2021

About the Item

Artist Comments
"Trees are the guardians of life and history unfolds beneath their branches," states artist Brit J Oie. "My great grandmother planted some Beech trees that I climbed in as a child. I never met her, but I think I felt her presence under those trees. There would be some interesting stories to hear if only we could understand the language of trees."The highly textured surface is created by a combination of embossed papers and layering of acrylic paint.

About the Artist
Artist Brit J Oie grew up in a small rural town on the west coast of Norway where nature was her playground and creativity was a way of life. The men in her family were woodworkers and the women did knitting, sewing and weaving. Brit started her art career as a weaver in Norway. After marrying an American and moving to the United States, she went back to school for a degree in Fine Art. During her senior exhibition, Brit developed her mixed media technique using embossed papers and acrylic paint, which is a culmination of all the styles she has previously mastered. Today, she works in a light-filled studio in the River Arts District of Asheville, NC. Her work is held in numerous private collections in the U.S. and Norway as well as the University of North Carolina, Asheville. Outside of the studio, Brit enjoys hiking, gardening and soaking in outdoor hot springs, relaxing and taking in the river view.

  • Large Animal Wall Sculpture: 'Wormhole'
    By Gin Stone
    Located in New York, NY
'I am a multidisciplinary artist with a focus on ecofeminism using fiber and mixed media constructions. My materials include hand-dyed commercially fished line and ghost gear, recycled and antique textiles, fabric printed with cyanotype emulsions and found objects. I change the existing surface of recognizable animals by creating a veneer of unexpected color and imagery. This forces the viewer to consider the shape more carefully by visually exploring its new topography. The creation process can be likened to painting with fiber (that has been tinted with hand-mixed dyes) on a three-dimensional canvas. Intense work is spent creating the eyes and ears to convey the emotion of each animal. I look to the work of Joan Mitchell and The Quilters of Gee’s Bend as inspiration for pattern and color, as well as charts, iconography, and satellite imaging.' -Gin Stone...
