Dennis Campay
"Wine and Fish" Abstract Mixed Media Still Life on Square Panel

About the Item

"Wine and Fish" is a framed mixed media on panel work by Dennis Campay, depicting a skillet with fish and vibrant sides alongside a glass of wine. Campay's painterly brushstrokes abstract the subject, adding a playful ambience to the bright still-life. This piece is finished in a wide gray and metallic custom frame. Pricing reflects the pictured frame. Unframed dimensions are 12 X 12 inches. About the artist: “Dennis Campay is a true original, whose gift pulled him out of his travails to where he is today; the most consistently exciting painter in the south, one of the best Americans in years. He went through an unending apprenticeship such as no one does today, yet none of those lessons were lost or useless. His age old themes have never been more urgently felt; this is why his paintings are new...” John T. Spike, Florence, Italy, Art Historian, Curator, Author Dennis Campay was born in 1950 in Portsmouth, Virginia. Campay began his artistic career at the age of 37. He received his Bachelor’s of Fine Arts from the Atlanta College of Art at 42. Considered one of the most classic visual story tellers, Campay invites the viewer into his languorous, richly colored worlds of reverie, reality, intimacy and spiritual journey. His kaleidoscopic mixed media scenes present a mesmerizing mix of columns, water towers, bridges, and silvery bodies of water, all of which were inspired by his travels. The solitary pianos and ubiquitous chairs take their place where interiors and exteriors blend and beckon, evoking memories, illusions and dreams. Campay takes a question or observation and connects those principals and theories with emblems, symbols and signs creating the imagery represented in many of his architectural compositions. This philosophy combined with his passion for drawing enables him to build and construct pictures that embody proportion, harmony, inspiration and spiritually….evidence that leaves much for the viewer to feel, reason and reflect upon. Campay has participated in numerous solo and group shows throughout his career and is the recipient of many awards.

  • When I Was Younger - Minimalist Scenic Still Life Flowers in a Vase Painting
    By Mike Gough
    Located in Los Angeles, CA
Gough’s interest in the elusive quality of memory has always been an invariable interest in his art practice. Rooted in memories of his upbringing in Newfoundland, Gough’s paintings are autobiographical but carry universal narratives. In the absence of detail there is an opportunity for one’s own memories to develop. An expansive solitude and sense of isolation is met with a universal feeling of what it means to belong. This unique 16 inch square mixed media painting on panel explores our relationship with memory and the natural world. This piece is signed by the artist on the back and is wired and ready to hang. The sides are painted and the artwork does not require framing. Free local Los Angeles area delivery. Affordable Continental U.S. and international shipping available. This artwork comes with a certificate of authenticity issued by the art gallery. At its core, his practice explores how our relationship with the natural world connects and defines us. Working in mixed media, he endeavors to create familiar meditative spaces that exhibit a personal journey, but simultaneously invite the viewer to insert themselves in the narrative. These paintings partially stem from a fear of memory loss as a result of experiences with Alzheimer’s in his family. Not only does the painting process exercise Gough’s memory, but the paintings themselves act as records of his experience becoming a blend of reality and idealism. They are not painted from photographs; the places are not precisely rendered and the experiences are not accurately told, but they are Gough’s authentic recollection of them. The intent of his work is to create a patchwork map of memories as a guide back to the authenticity of human feeling.
