Caroline Bullock
"All Possible Worlds (Conservatory)" - Celestial Abstract - Cyanotype - Kapoor

2017

About the Item

"All Possible Worlds (Conservatory)" is a work on paper featuring hues of violet, green, blue & magenta. Caroline Bullock is inspired by the work of Agnes Martin, Anish Kapoor, Katharina Grosse, Andy Goldsworthy and Lucy Dodd. Atlanta native, Caroline Bullock creates mixed media abstract works whose primary inspiration is the human relationship with the natural world. Bullock is interested in how we attempt to create our perceived human reality with complex systems of mathematics, science, and technology, but with nature as the backdrop and laboratory. Mathematics is the language of nature, but it also distorts the perception of natural beauty and mystery. Technology allows us to explore the universe, but also encourages us to manipulate nature to our peril. She is intrigued by our innate proclivity to impose rational explanations and limits upon what is natural, irrational and unconscious and to unmask life’s invisible mysteries. In her most recent work, Bullock is inspired by an interest in the multiverse or “many-worlds” theory of quantum mechanics. The idea that the 3-dimensional world may be just an illusion resonates with with her as a painter who makes paintings that are, in their very essence, nothing but an illusion. The paintings in the “All Possible Worlds” series juxtapose multiple mediums, that rely on both randomness and intention, with more direct elements such as photography and mechanical, geometric drawings. Inks and watercolors blend and react, creating forms that become almost organic in nature— flowing, bursting, seething, or vibrating—while the geometric drawings, intertwining amongst the ink pools, connote the structure as well as the energy of the forms, creating new and different worlds unto themselves. The process often seems in conflict, but the intent is to bridge these conflicts in a method that is primarily unexpected and always enlightening.

"Petalled Recollection" - colorful abstract painting - nature - botanical
By Evan Blackwell-Helgeson
Located in Atlanta, GA
This work on canvas is a mixed media abstract work featuring hues of blue, orange, and green. Framed in a natural wood floater frame measuring 20 by 16 inches. Evan is inspired by the works of Frank Bowling, Helen Frankenthaler, Candida Alvarez and Dorothy Hood. Atlanta-based artist, Evan Blackwell Helgeson’s recent body of work “I Know The Place,” is rooted in the exploration & abstraction of nature, combining the representational with the metaphorical & intangible experience of varied landscapes. Her mark-making aims to express the complex compounded layering of experience as we process varying circumstances, emotions & memories while in nature. “I Know The Place” explores the dichotomy & simultaneity of the cycles of nature & lived experience: as new things bloom, something is decaying; as new terrain is explored, a yearning for home grows. Travel in recent years to the Pacific Northwest & Hawaii have deeply influenced Evan’s work, & have come to intertwine with the layered marks & known gestures that express her own home. It has provided a unique contrast to these known environments & subsequent mark making, drawing unique parallels to the way we compile experiences that create our complex perspectives; interweaving memory & possibility to create new paths forward. "Traveling from the dense layers of the treeline where horizons are hidden, a desire to find a path out begins to grow," says Evan. "Similarly, the wide expanse & monolithic scale of the coastline displays the fullness of the horizon & the dizzying implication of new possibilities & the unknown. One does not negate the other, but rather they inform each other, recalling the cycle of being drawn out into new terrain, & receding deep into the comfort of home. An ebb & flow that creates dynamic balance." Evan Blackwell Helgeson is an Atlanta-based artist who works in painting, drawing, installation & ceramics. She received a BFA from the University of Georgia’s Lamar Dodd...
