About the Item

This Large Chrysanthemum Carved Lacquer Box by Chen Wu is an Edo-period example of Kamakura-bori lacquerware. Built on a solid wooden core, it is finished with layers of dark lacquer and deeply carved with flourishing chrysanthemum motifs. In Japanese culture, the chrysanthemum symbolizes longevity and integrity, and here its layered petals are carved with flowing precision, radiating vitality and set off by the lacquer’s rich, dignified sheen. Kamakura-bori originated in the Kamakura period under the influence of Chinese carved lacquer from the Song and Yuan dynasties. Unlike Chinese lacquer, which relied on building up thick layers before carving, Japanese artisans carved directly into wood before lacquering, creating bold textures that emphasize the beauty of tool marks. Initially used for Buddhist ritual objects, the craft later expanded to everyday vessels in the Meiji era. This box, both practical and symbolic, reflects the maturity and elegance of Edo-period Kamakura-bori. As an Edo-period piece, minor signs of use remain are shown in the photographs for careful consideration.
