About the Item
These yellow monotypes look like block prints or screen prints but are actually lensless photographs. They began as blue cyanotypes and were turned yellow through a process called "toning." Cyanotypes are a form of 19th century photography also known as sun prints and blueprints. The chemicals in the photo emulsion typically produce a blue and white image. However, this print was “toned” or bleached in detergent to turn it a warm shade of butter yellow.
The thick watercolor paper is mounted on wooden panels with their 1.5 inch deep sides painted white as well as the front edge, which serves as a frame. Each panel individually measures 12 x 24 x 1.5 inches (30 x 60 x 4 cm). These two mounted prints on panels can be hung close together or spaced apart in a hallway or staircase.
The paper is sealed with a very thin coat of rubbed-on cold wax medium. This matte barely perceptible layer protects the paper against dirt, dust and moisture, but does not have the noticeable thick, shiny, glassy look of an encaustic finish.

Christine So is an American printmaker, photographer and painter living in the hills across the bay from her hometown, San Francisco. She is best known for her blue and white cyanotype photographs of forests shrouded in fog. The Foggy Woods series is ever-growing as the artist continually hikes these hills which are often foggy at dawn. She explores radically different ways to use this antique photographic medium with and without out a camera. At times her blue prints look like screen prints. At others like abstract watercolors. Besides printing photographs from negatives, botanicals using entire branches, altering the chemical recipe to obtain novel colors, and creating abstract cyanotypes of deliberate patterns, she also paints images using the light-sensitive solution and prints a pattern within them. These last works she calls “cyanotype paintings”. The multiple-day process depends on being able to see while painting in a dark room so as to not expose the light-sensitive painted silhouette before it’s time. She named her series of botanical paintings which have a fine blue and white pattern “Delft Garden” after the Dutch painted porcelain. Located in Oakland, CA
This is a combination of painting and photography, the antique cyanotype process and the biggest the artist has ever made. The silhouette of the plant was first drawn, then painted not with ink or paint, but with light-sensitive photo emulsion. The blue and white pattern seen in each leaf is a sun print or lensless photograph of tiny plants laid on top of the painted area.
The tiny flowers in the pattern across the painted silhouette are of the same species as the larger painted flower. "Cow Parsnip" and "cow parsley" are common names for this giant white native Californian wildflower...

"Blue Gum 2", Contemporary, Trees, Blue, Yellow, Cyanotype, Photograph, 2018
By Marie Craig
Located in Natick, MA
By toning cyanotypes, using chemicals that turn the deep blue images to yellow, Craig's photographs fade and begin to disappear. Craig is curious about what happens when she stops the process at various stages, and when she lets the images ‘evaporate’ completely. Nothing lasts forever.
Blue Gum trees, native to Australia, have survived for millennia by adapting and thriving in a climate where wildfires are common. Now invasive in many parts of the world, this 'gasoline tree' is a dangerous fire hazard, especially in the face of climate change, which is expected to make wildfires more common.
White mat, framed behind glass in white wood frame, 14 x 17 inches
Marie Craig’s photography considers objects that were once imbued with life but have since been abandoned. Juncture, Craig’s latest series, alludes to a turning point, the moment where a choice made profoundly alters the trajectory of what follows, whether evident at the time or not. She uses cyanotype, because in this early photographic process choice and chance factor equally into the outcome of each piece. Craig’s layered photographs...
