About the Item
Bokhara II and Distant Echoes of Home by Claudia Marseille are recent paintings influenced by her trip to Uzbekistan. The works incorporate ancient Middle Eastern decorative elements. The birds, elephant and the earth are timeless reminders of the fleeting beauty and fragility of nature in this challenging time. All are mixed media encaustic paintings.
“Travel to faraway lands to experience the variety of human creation and experience has always inspired my work,” says Marseille. “I like seeing the different manifestations of human expression and culture.” Marseille has traveled recently to India, Uzbekistan, Russia, Morocco, Turkey, South Africa and Japan.
Marseille’s intelligent and richly layered paintings convey a deep respect for time and materials. They have a presence, like an ancient wall, rich in history. She will patiently apply as many as 20 layers of glazes or encaustics to give the painting history and depth and then begin excavating and building. The viewer is able to experience both the complexity and the enjoyment of the process.
