Bebeached is an original painting by Colin Whitaker. J.W.M. Turner was a frequent visitor to the East Kent coastline, a fact that has always interested me. This painting although not directly representational was inspired by the working harbour at Whitstable. The primary concern with this painting is the balancing of contrast between the ‘Romantic’ and the ‘Classical’ as opposites.
Recent paintings further explore memory and painting. Memory, like the process of painting itself is fallible, rarely accurate, but true to feeling. Memory records what we feel about something not what we know. In the act of painting I attempt to dredge up from the sub-conscious impressions from the seen and felt to try to get at the truth. Intuition versus instinct and informed spontaneity results mostly in a series of slow-motion train wrecks, the beautiful and the hideous colliding at speed and the outcome, if there is one, comes by way of trying to fix the mess with intuition guiding the process. The final component in the process is YOU the viewer. You complete the painting uniquely when there are resonances with your own experiences found in the surfaces in front of you.
