About the Item

Circle of Constance Howard British School, circa 1950 Cats and Flowers in a Conservatory Applique work picture Framed 60 by 50.5 cm., 23 ¾ by 20 in. (frame size 76 by 66 cm., 30 by 26 in.) Provenance: With Frost & Reed, 1950; Mrs H H Budd (?). The present work, glazed and in this original frame, was with the prominent London fine art dealers Frost and Reed in 1950 suggesting it was a work by a leading exponent of the newly fashionable and artistically acknowledged group of British textile artists and embroiderers. The modernised art form was pioneered by Constance Howard (1910-2000) who taught embroidery at Goldsmiths College. The piece predates Howard’s most famous piece, The Country Wife, a large textile hanging for the Country Pavilion of the Festival of Britain exhibition of 1951 (now in the collection of the National Needlework Archive). She was assisted in the work by some of her students, including Mary Quant. In 1953 Goldsmith’s established a separate department for embroidery, later making Howard the Department Head. The advanced design and use of different stitches, needlework techniques and fabrics suggests this may be the work of one of Howard’s students, if not by her own hand.

Mixed Media Floral Oil Painting Collage Bouquet of Flowers
By Jacques Lamy
Located in Surfside, FL
Born in Paris in 1946 and raised in the heart of an idyllic French countryside near the Loire Valley, Jacques Lamy began painting at a very early age. Jacques completed his formal artistic training at the prestigious Ecole Nationale Superieur des Arts Decoratifs (Paris) in 1971. While there, he received the highest peer recognition in European Arts; the coveted Prix de Rome award for painting. Jacques Lamy’s career as an artist, designer and art teacher took him from his native France to life abroad in Spain, Africa, and the United States. His broad artistic interests and his classic training in art and design have enabled him to enjoy a wide variety of artistic experiences from designing furniture, lamps, tapestries, and elegant garden statuary to creating large scale murals for public viewing and enjoyment. in addition to his renowned mural work, Jacques received international recognition for his decorative fresco paintings. Jacques personal artistic style is very much a melding of old and new – a merging of a classically trained artist with a modern artistic vision. The medium is multi-media and the composition has a modern, abstract quality but the Old World training in design and composition lends the whole an air of classical grace. 19th Century American Applique Quilt in Floral Pattern from Pennsylvania
Located in Barrington, IL
This exquisite American appliqué quilt, hand-stitched in Pennsylvania during the late 1800s, is a remarkable example of 19th-century textile artistry. Featuring a charming “Floral” pattern, the quilt showcases delicate red and pink blossoms with graceful green stems and leaves, all set against a soft ivory background. Each element of the design was individually hand-cut and appliquéd with meticulous care, framed within panels that speak to the quilter’s precision and patience. The result is a visually stunning composition that radiates warmth, craftsmanship, and heartfelt dedication. Quilts of this era—especially those entirely hand-stitched—are increasingly rare and highly collectible, prized for their historical value and timeless beauty. Due to its delicacy and artistic appeal, this quilt is especially well-suited for use as a wall-hung tapestry, where it can be appreciated as a piece of early American folk art. A true labor of love, this quilt offers both visual serenity and a deep connection to America's rich quilting heritage.
