About the Item

Monumental 3-D collage painting by Detroit artists, Darin Darby and Ozzie D. Norman "Weapons of Mass Creativity." Artists Statement: The art piece Weapons of Mass Creativity features five soldiers of art: a musician, poet, visual artist, muralist, and a photographer. Each of the soldiers is equipped with the tools they use for creative warfare. Instead of deadly weapons, their tools include a guitar, poems, paint, and a camera. The artists use their talents as a tool to promote peace, unity, love, healing and prosperity. The five uniquely gifted soldiers are shown standing together as they prepare to restore a war-torn city. The goal is to demonstrate how various artworks can be used as a tactic to resolve disputes without violence. These five artists support the military and believe that the world can be healed through art which stands in line with the mantra “Make Art Not War.” Artist Onzie D. Norman and Darin Darby have formed a powerful collaboration. They utilize traditional artistic styles and infuse afro-centric elements. The duo draws their creative inspiration from different cultures, science fiction, fantasy, and history. They use multiple mediums including paper, various types of paint, metal, and wood, which add dimension and depth to each piece. Their creations are an unorthodox interpretation of visual art that is innovative, captivating, and thought provoking. Onzie is a mixed media artist. He is also known as Umbazi, which means carpenter in Zulu. His use of vibrant color combinations and unconventional shapes give his artwork an unparalleled edge. Darin is a figurative artist, also known as Iphazili, which means puzzle in Zulu. His attention to detail, unique art process trademarked Laypuzzim®, and ability to capture the likeness of his subject matter has distinctly differentiated him from other artists. These two artists have combined their strengths to form a powerful collaboration producing artwork that will surely take the art world by storm. Darin Darby (b.1967) has been a creative for as long as he can remember. His mother is an artist and her gift was passed down to him and his older brother. Pencil drawings were Darin’s biggest interest in his earlier years. As he matured he ventured off into colored pencil drawing, charcoal drawing, and painting. He has always been intrigued by different artistic techniques which he sometimes mixes to create new and unique styles. Darin has a deep appreciation and respect for all types of artwork. His artwork has been included in exhibitions at several galleries throughout Metro-Detroit. It is also a part of the permanent collection at Mack Alive and was featured on both Fox2 News Detroit and WDIV-TV. He continues to reinvent himself by experimenting with different materials and textiles. He has always had a great appreciation for all art styles and seeks unique ways to create art. In 2014, he developed a new process of collage that he calls Laypuzzim® (layered puzzled image.) Laypuzzim® art is created by cutting textured card stock paper, mat board, or wood. Each individual color of the art piece is cut out by hand, layered, and puzzled together to create an image using negative space. This process is very innovative, intriguing and thought provoking. Over the years I have drawn inspiration from many things. However most of my current artwork is inspired by biblical themes and events that took place during my childhood in the city of Detroit. I am passionate about creating artwork with a message and sparking meaningful conversations. Onzie D. Norman (b.1980) is a self-taught mixed media painter and wood sculptor from Detroit Michigan. He started in the field of carpentry in high school and later graduated from the Detroit Carpenters Apprenticeship School in 2003. This craft would play an important role in his artistic development. After a vision in 2013 Onzie began to draw, this led to his experimenting with painting on wood. He constructs his own canvas out of wood and uses acrylic, enamel, spray paint, ink, paper, collage and resin to create one-of-a-kind artworks. Onzie's work has been exhibited at Art Prize, the Bombay Artesian Series, Essence Festival, Charles H. Wright Museum, Actors Theater in Louisville, National Afro-American Museum in Wilberforce, Museum of Science and Industry Chicago, Agora Gallery in New York, Xavier University and The Dayton Art Institute. His work is found in many private collections including that of Don Tuski President of the College for Creative Studies, actor Charles Michael Davis, NFL linebacker Deandre Levy, Helene Gayle president of Spelman College and American journalist Stephen Henderson. Mr. Norman states: I have an energetic approach to interpreting various aspects of life. I manipulate and reimagine ideas with mixed media materials, using paper, collage, paint, and wood to create distinctive bodies of work. Most of my artwork is created on a handcrafted wood canvas which allows me to construct different shapes and sizes. My focus is to use art to address black history, urban scenes, still life and ethnicity especially through mixed media portraiture. So ultimately, I am developing into a visual interpreter of life and creator of images, showing how all aspects of the material world can be reimagined and reformatted to express ways of thinking and living that embrace all of humanity. As collaborating artists, Darin Darby & Onzie D. Norman have won the following awards: 2022 1st Place, Black Heritage Through Visual Rhythms Exhibition (3D Category) Dayton Art Institute, Dayton, OH 2021 People’s Choice Award, Art of Soul Art Exhibition National Afro-American Museum, Wilberforce, OH 2019 1st Place, Art of Soul Art Exhibition National Afro-American Museum, Wilberforce, OH Shadow box effect of frame. "Sistas" Figurative, Portraits, Words, Frontal, Acrylic
By Henry Heading
Located in Detroit, MI
“Sistas” is a portrait collection of strong, intelligent women who look capable of taking on and managing whatever life has to hand them. That they are visually beautiful is actually beside the point for Henry has managed to capture in paint their inner beauty flowing from their eyes and features. Henry has sensitively revealed each individual’s personality. These are women you want to know and from whom you want to feel their power. Henry says that, “Painting is like breathing for me. I do so daily and appreciate my gift and ability. Perfection drives me as I create each piece. It must be unique. It must stand out, and is not complete until that special quality is achieved in my eyes.” Being able to create is an essential part of my life. It is an extension of my innermost thoughts and imagination. My primary focus of art is realism--using oils and acrylics. Occasionally, I switch mediums and design and build three dimensional pieces. Working mixed mediums, I use various wood, metal and paint, thus allowing me to achieve the visual effects I am looking for. Many of my pieces have been derived from my attraction to Art Deco and Ethnic designs. I am not satisfied until each piece, regardless of the medium or size, has reached the highest possible level of aesthetic quality and craftsmanship I can give it. I have enjoyed creating art since childhood. While a student at Martin Luther King Jr. high school in Detroit, I created and presented a portrait to then Mayor Coleman A. Young. A scholarship from Center for Creative Studies now the College for Creative Studies afforded me the opportunity to work towards and receive a BA in Fine Arts. Faculty and graduates of CCS include Richard Jerzy, Harry Bertoia, Doug Chaing (currently director of Lucas Film), Stephen Dinehart (game maker, writer, designer connected with The David Lynch Foundation), Tyree Guyton (international artist), Herb Babcock, Jerome Feretti, Kevin Siembieda (writer, designer and publisher of role-playing games), Renee Radell, Philip Pearlstein, Charles McGee (nationally recognized African American sculptor of animal and dancing spirits), Philip Pearlstein (2000 Honorary Doctorate, Modern Realism style), John Louis Krieger (American Modern), William Girard (American Modern), and Charles Culver. Mr. Heading understands the joy found in art and how it affects a young person's heart. He has shared his love for art as a mentor/teacher at the Virgil L. Carr Center in Detroit, Michigan. Students not only grew in their art experience, but also exhibited at the Ann Arbor Art Fair. Winning the 2013 MI Great Artist Competition was an honor for Mr. Heading. He is thankful to Park West Gallery owner Albert Scaglione and Oakland County Executive L. Brooks Patterson for the opportunity. Mr. Heading has been featured on ASPIRE TV, shows at the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History, the National Conference of Artists and other numerous galleries. In addition, he is a book illustrator. His murals create a beautiful focal point and conversation piece on the walls of homes, churches and health care facilities. His art and furniture is enjoyed and treasured by collectors across the United States and Canada. Kohei Suzuki, the former Mayor of Toyota City, Japan has a box designed by Henry. Mr. Heading's work is part of the major TCF Convention Center's permanent collection located in the downtown business district in Detroit, Michigan. His first attempt at mosaic tile was creating a Tiger sculpture to benefit the Detroit Tigers...
