About the Item

Red Flower Study by Dawn Basset, a Tadelakt plaster on wood panel, is part of a minimalist series debuted at the 2025 Seattle Art Fair. A superb example of what can be accomplished when outdated limitations are removed, Dawn’s mastery of Tadelakt plaster takes the ancient into a new dimension. Hand created hues, unconventional forms and audacious wit are all hallmarks of Ms. Bassett’s creations. Dawn Bassett’s journey into the world of fine art is anything but conventional. Raised in the remote mountains, far from artistic influences, the idea of a career in the arts seemed distant—almost like a walk on the moon. She didn’t attend art school or follow a traditional path into fine art. Yet, from a young age, Dawn’s vivid imagination and innate creativity have been integral to her identity. A largely self-taught artist, Dawn has spent nearly two decades refining her craft, particularly in the ancient art of architectural plaster. Through global residencies and focused explorations, she has developed innovative techniques, including her mastery of Moroccan Tadelakt, a 2,000-year-old medium. In her hands, this timeless material transcends its architectural roots, becoming a modern language for storytelling, rich in texture and depth. Her work is a testament to her commitment to unlocking the secrets of this ancient craft, transforming it into a new artistic expression.
