I remember feeling a surge of joy when I felt the subtle pulse of new friendship as a child. New friends made their way into my life, not often, but effortlessly. It just felt good, like the first licks of an ice cream cone on a warm summer afternoon. Having ice cream with one another, especially in this beautiful setting, embodies contentment for these new fast friends. There's just not much that can top robot love. This wood panel was blanketed first with the torn, yellowed pages of a novel, then painted over with transparent yellow/green acrylic so that the text is readily visible on all sides, as well as in some more transparent areas of the painting. The image itself is done in oil. The work comes wired and ready to hang.
About the Artist
Diane Flick is a Bay Area artist who paints quirky portraits of robots with a playful color palette and masterful realism. Each of Diane’s robots expresses its own humanlike and idiosyncratic personality. From an early age, she had a fascination with inanimate objects and often imagined what they would be like with human characteristics. Her portfolio explores the human experience through non-human subjects.

The world that I live in is uncertain, unstable, but I have to keep going and find something that can comfort me. This work is talking about the uncomfortable moment, but hopeful future, at the same time. This piece is made by layering Korean mulberry paper on a wooden panel with homemade flour glue. Then I apply a glue base. Next, I draw my sketch, and trace it on the paper. Then I paint three or four layers of a background color using pigments and glue base. Lastly, I paint the animal subject in fine detail, which takes most of time. The painting is on a cradled wood panel with finished edges. It comes ready to hang.
