About the Item

In this contemporary botanical textile, a group of leaves in various shapes are composed of delicately stitched donated clothing, textiles, notions, buttons and guitar string ball-ends, in yellow ochre, a blue checkered pattern and botanical pattern, and olive green on a light blue layered textile background with a dark brown border and white lace lined with buttons on the bottom. Floated on a natural maple wood spacer in a natural maple wood frame with UV filtering anti-reflective museum glass. 9 x 12 inches (unframed), 11 x 14 inches (framed). Donna Sharrett's artist statement asserts: "I work under the influence of that which I am by inheritance: artist, environmentalist, gardener, seamstress and activist. After a three-decade exploration of the objects, techniques and traditions used to remember human loved ones, I have shifted my focus to memorialize leaves of beloved tree species threatened by climate change, invasive plants, disease and insect introductions, harmful landscaping trends, and commercial interests. I was raised to love and steward nature, am a Master Gardener Volunteer with Cornell Cooperative Extension, and an advocate for responsible policy changes (and their enforcement) to strengthen protections of natural resources; all of which influenced the creation of the Tailored Herbaria series. I consider the works in this series both portraits and evidence of place within a specific time. Leaves serve to represent trees, the ancestors of ancient inhabitants of the places we now occupy and with whom we co-exist; their presence often underappreciated or unseen. The Tailored Herbaria series responds to the accelerating loss of the naturally occurring biodiversity which defines the places we inhabit (our parks, our parkways, and our home landscapes). Human existence depends on plants – for stormwater management, climate control, and biodiversity. Much of the previous loss could have been prevented. Much could be done to prevent further loss. Awareness can produce action. Action is imperative. Botanical nomenclature and watershed location of the tree(s) which produced the leaf (leaves) title the works. Materials and processes developed for my 'Memento' and 'Arrangement' series are used in honor of my mother for whom handmade stitches were love notes held in homemade clothing, for my brother with the use of guitar-strings, and for my father who fostered my love of trees."

Japanese Botany, Original Contemporary Abstract Mixed Media Textile Wall Hanging Artist Commentary: INSPIRED IN JAPANESE AESTHETICS Keywords: Abstract, Nature, patterns, circles, ovals, white Artist Biography: My artwork is engaged to nature and its recurrent patterns and rhythms. I use them as a base in order to create my compositions. I´m attracted to repetitive sequences, combining separate elements to form a cohesive group. It isn’t a strict conceptual idea of repetition on itself; my work doesn’t seek to impose an order or structure, but rather to enjoy the rhythm of repetition. Silk and paper have the softness and malleability that I need in order to create my desired forms, shapes and even shadows. The process to carry out my work is thorough and methodical. I choose as materials small and simple elements; such as feathers made out of paper and silk and then organized in a precise order. This allows me to build a group of entities that end up being the final artwork. My goal is to create projects that inspire, connect and touch people emotionally, taking the viewer on a journey through different ethereal, botanical and peaceful landscapes. I was Born in Santiago, Chile in 1973. I grew up surrounded by Chilean...
