About the Item

"Express Train" is an original piece by Eustace Mamba and measures 36"h x 48"w x 1.5"d. This piece is made from cutting and sewing loose canvas and found materials together. Mamba creates his figure out of oil, acrylic, and collage. Mamba feverishly documents his surroundings, characterizing the historical and cultural charge of his neighborhood while also being inspired by passersby. His process swells as he introduces found materials to build his characters: cigar wrappers, cardboard, fabric, and foil are identifiable yet are expertly tied together through Mamba’s signature sewn patterns and neon underpainting. His visible sewing notably brings together disparate objects to form engaging portraits or subway scenes, highlighting the labor and care he takes in constructing his artwork. He does not shy from recycling or deconstructing a work in progress back into raw material for his next piece. He leaves stitching as a token of memory as if his thread ties together the collective memory of his community near and far. Mamba leans into the necessity of using found material or old paintings, as each upcycled textile holds a story that is yet to be discovered and can be given a second life through his work. "Black Subjectivity and Afro-Pessimism continue to influence my art as I strive to deviate from colonial image norms. Threads connect the images, symbolizing unity and societal forces. Like a scientist, I engage in an ongoing dialogue of discovery, to uncover new dimensions within myself.” -Eustace Mamba Influenced by his West Indian heritage and Manhattan upbringing, Eustace's interdisciplinary artistic practice spans painting, sculpture, experimental design, and digital media. Through the integration of everyday objects, his recent work delves into themes of Black Subjectivity and Afro-Pessimism, challenging colonial image norms and symbolizing unity with the recurring motif of thread. Eustace sees his artistic dialogue as a scientist's exploration, unveiling new dimensions within himself and inviting viewers to contemplate the complexities of contemporary society.

"Sista Annie Mae" Hand crafted paper collage of abstracted female figure
By Shawn Theodore
Located in Philadelphia, PA
"Sista Annie Mae" is an original piece by Shawn Theodore made from hand-crafted paper collage and acrylic and archival ink on Epson Hot Press Natural paper on wood panel. Theodore delves into the specific experiences of African American families, capturing a longing for lost photographs, missing heirlooms, and vanished archives. Using a blend of traditional portraiture, found photographs, paint, paper, pencils, and digital manipulation, Theodore creates archetypes representing hypothetical family members, spiritual guardians, and ancestors. These boldly crafted archetypes inhabit an imagined macro-family album, offering a unique perspective on portraiture, connection, and community. Theodore's work aims to deepen spiritual connections and encourage personal introspection. This piece measures 36”h x 48”w and comes with a gallery-issues Certificate of Authenticity. Shawn Theodore (b. 1970) was born in Germany to American parents from Philadelphia, and currently lives and works in Philadelphia. Theodore was awarded the prestigious PDN’s 30 New & Emerging Photographers to Watch (2019), the Getty Images / ARRAY ‘Where We Stand’ grant, and a grant from the Knight Foundation for ‘A Dream Deferred’.
