About the Item

Artist: Franc Palaia Title: Pompeii Angel Medium: Color photograph, paint on sheetrock Size: 34 x 25 inches Unique - Award winning artist Franc Palaia is known for his contemporary painted "secco fresco" paintings (painting into dry plaster). His early frescoes were part of contemporary urban walls of China inspired by his trip to China in 1981. His Roman works were fabricated with plaster layered over large slabs of Polystyrene or Styrofoam, where he painted into dry plaster with water base casein paint along with other materials. This simulated Roman and Italian Renaissance style of painting onto wall into plaster was seen as a new contemporary variation on an old classic technique. "To bring my fresco style into the contemporary realm, I also add collage, spray, pastel, oil crayon, found wood and metal pieces and to finish them off, I sand, gouge, scrape and literally batter the surfaces to age them and make the simulated wall fragments look as realistic as possible. Their scale ranges from a few feet ups to 16 feet." Palaia still uses a similar technique on his latest works, however the new works are primarily photography based or 'photo sculpture,' in addition to the large-scale archival photographs, he adds collage, paint, found objects, 3-D sculptural elements and the battered and aged surfaces. Palaia uses his own formula to create fake concrete on the edges to complete the total illusion of an actual wall fragment. The final works simulate real chunks of stone masonry that bring the pieces closer to architecture or urban archaeology. "The irony of these mixed media photo-sculptures is that they look extremely heavy, but are actually feather light (they only weigh a few pounds each) they look old, but they are brand new and they look real, but they are completely fabricated." The street imagery in his work is culled from walking the streets of Naples, Rome, Paris, Sardinia, Berlin, Havana and New York City. Throughout his career, Palaia has collaborated with other well-known street and graffiti artists and he was commissioned by Jean Michel Basquiat to paint two paintings that were eventually sold at Christie's auction house after the artist's death. His street art photographs have appeared in two recent documentary films, 2017's "Shadowman- The Life and Street Works of Richard Hambleton" by Oren Jacoby and "Boom for Real- The Teenage Years of Jean Michel Basquiat," by Sara Driver from 2018. Both films were screened at the Tribeca Film Festival in NYC. - Franc Palaia is a New York based multi disciplinary artist working in photography, public art, murals, sculpture and is an independent curator and musician. He has curated 35 group exhibits on photography and sculpture in the U.S. and in Italy with reviews in the New York Times, Village Voice and WNET Ch 13. Franc has been included in over 300 group shows and 45 solo-shows, regionally, nationally and internationally with awards that include 20 grants, fellowships and residencies, they include the prestigious Rome Prize Fellowship, two Polaroid Sponsorships a L. C. Tiffany grant, a Puffin Grant, two NYFA grants and several NJ and Arts Mid Hudson grants. Exhibitions include the Metropolitan Museum of Art, NY, Whitney Museum of American Art annex, LA MoCA , OK Harris gallery, PS1, New Museum, ACA Galleries, NY, Saatchi Museum, London, Paris International Urban Art Fair, the Fundacio Salvador Dali-Gala in Spain, the Velan Arte Contemporanea in Turin, Italy and many others. His works are included in the permanent collections of MoMA, Newark and Brooklyn Museums and the New Jersey State Museum to name a few. He has painted over three dozen murals some of which have appeared on WNBC TV , Time Warner Cable TV, and the Discovery Channel. He was named “Distinguished Alumni of 2012” from Kean University. His photographs have been featured in two recent documentary films, “Shadowman” on Richard Hambleton in 2017 and “Boom for Real” on Jean -Michel Basquiat in 2018, both premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival, NYC.
