About the Item

The Chinkin Lacquer Dandelion Box is a masterpiece by Fumio Mae, recognized as a Living National Treasure of Japan. Using the demanding chinkin technique, Mae engraved delicate dandelion seeds and butterflies across the surface, creating a composition of remarkable elegance and depth. Each fine incision filled with gold conveys a sense of movement, as if the dandelions are floating in air. The lid presents a lively, poetic scene, and even the inside of the box continues the motif, showcasing the artist’s thoughtful attention to detail. The result is a refined work that conveys both solemn beauty and natural lyricism, completed through immense time and dedication. Fumio Mae, born in 1940 in Wajima, Ishikawa, is the designated preserver of the chinkin technique, one of Japan’s Important Intangible Cultural Properties, as known as the Living National Treasure. His artistry combines technical mastery and deep aesthetic sensibility, ensuring the survival and evolution of this centuries-old lacquer craft.
