About the Item
John Chang’s work is about childhood memory, cultural identity, and distance. “A Chinese student has to learn a few thousand words in order to write and read. I am also interested in black and white because black and white are not color, it’s about life and death, day and night, and negative and positive energy we have to deal with in our everyday life. In ways that transcend both the text and the medium to achieve a new level of awareness ‒ the higher consciousness that is also the goal of calligraphy. Because the characters function as visual elements rather than lexicography means, even the audience that can’t read Chinese can take part in the language of the module, the mark, the gesture, the performance, and the design. The ‘picture’ that results now reads like the as essential product of the effort to communicate across time/space/ culture, and not just a painterly allusion to it.”
Born and raised in Shanghai, China. John Chang is an artist based in Southern California. John Chang has an MFA in Visual Art from College of Art and Design at Lesley University. He also gained a B.A., School of Art and Design, Shanghai Institute of Technology Shanghai, China. He also studied with the well-known artists Xu Bing and Judith Barry. John’s works have been widely exhibited and featured in diverse publications.

- French Mixed Media Abstract on Canvas.Located in Cotignac, FRColourful, French mixed media abstract, acrylic, newsprint and ink from the 1980s. The canvas is signed and dated bottom right but we have not yet managed to decipher it. A colourful and engaging painting crossing over styles. The colourfield elements are reminiscent of the work of Mark Rothko, three defined bands of colour in orange/pink tones vertically dissecting the painting with one horizontal band across the top, and yet the elongated depiction of the female figures within the bands remind us of Gustav Klimt and his paintings of Adele. The background of the painting has been worked broadly with a palette knife whilst the detail has been added quickly and deftly with ink or finer brushstrokes. With the addition of newsprint (in French) the artist may...Category
