Collage has existed as an art medium for centuries, but it wasn’t until the early 20th century that collage art really came into its own. The French term collage was coined by Georges Braque and Pablo Picasso, who both made use of collage techniques in their Cubist paintings; collage was also popular among the artists of the Dada movement. The artists of Abstract Expressionism used it to add dimensionality to their work. And pop artists used it as a critique and commentary on contemporary consumer culture.
George Schulman's large-scale collage works employ fabric, cut outs and items such as bells and plastic toys in contrast to the underlying composition which is largely abstract. The eye wants to combine these body parts and other items into a whole but is prevented from doing so, forcing it to look at the painting as something swirling and moving--as itself and nothing else.
We know of very few artists working in large-scale collage the way Schulman does.
