Gian Berto Vanni
Episodes on Wood I

Buyer Protection Guaranteed

This bright and colorful painting has been created by using several different techniques and juxtaposing a range of media. Vanni used oil paint on a wood panel and inserted fragments of mosaics, cloths and sgraffito on gesso. The outcome is not just visual but tactile as well, as the viewers can touch and experience the different surfaces as their eyes travel across the painting. The visual dialogue between the green, red, blues and the natural wood color is also rhythmically measured by the use of different materials. The beautiful geometrical sgraffito technique used in a portion of the painting adds to the feeling of precious "archaeological" finding instilled by this piece.

Gian Berto Vanni was born in Rome. He studied with Vordemberge-Gildewart in Holland and color theory with Joseph Albers at Yale University in New Haven. He has been actively involved in the Italian Art scene of the 60s, moving to New York City at the end of the 70s. He has been teaching color theory at Cooper Union School of Art in NYC for 30 years.
He currently lives and works in New York and Greece. His work has been exhibited in the United States, Europe and Japan.
