About the Item
A Scottish Glasgow School Abstract Expressionist mixed media painting by Grant McTavish. The work is signed and dated bottom right and is resigned and dedicated to the backboard. There is also an exhibition label for the Glasgow School of Art Degree Show for 1988. The work is presented in a custom made wood frame with deep cut card mount under glass.
McTavish presented this piece as part of his degree show in 1988. It is a wonderful composition of different layers of paint which he has incorporated to create a form of 'paint fabric'. The jewel like colours mix and meld to create a unified form. McTavish titled the painting 'The Territory' which seems to be an allusion to the topographical nature of the image similar in form to the shape of Wales.
Abstract Expressionism is the term applied to new forms of abstract art developed by American painters such as Jackson Pollock, Mark Rothko and Willem de Kooning in the 1940s and 1950s. It is often characterised by gestural brush-strokes or mark-making, and the impression of spontaneity.

A colourful and engaging painting crossing over styles. The colourfield elements are reminiscent of the work of Mark Rothko, three defined bands of colour in orange/pink tones vertically dissecting the painting with one horizontal band across the top, and yet the elongated depiction of the female figures within the bands remind us of Gustav Klimt and his paintings of Adele.
