About the Item
This painting features hues of pink and orange. Made of clay found in a tributary of the Mississippi River, red ochre, gouache & water on Saunders 640 gsm measuring 60 by 40 inches unframed. This piece is part of a recent show titled "love as large as grief demands."
Heather ‘Bird’ Harris is an Atlanta-based artist and educator who prioritizes caretaking and connection. Her work explores the throughlines between history and ecological crises, engaging with communities, scientists, and site-specific materials to investigate land memory, systems of complicity, and possibilities for emergence. Her recent body of work, “love as large as grief demands,” transforms mapped industrial scars in Georgia and Louisiana into regenerative landscapes made with site-specific materials. Through shapes that can either build the future or jeopardize it— mycorrhizal webs, children’s drawing, coal and soil runoff, heliotropic growth —the works offer personal reflections on what hangs in the balance and what’s in our water, emphasizing the necessity of imagining possibility grounded in the physical histories of our landscapes.
Bird received her BS in art history from Skidmore College and master’s degree in education leadership from Columbia University. She has served as principal of a turnaround school in New Orleans and has consulted with school leaders across the South to implement equitable learning practices and anti-racist history education. Recent exhibitions include NADA Curates, the New Mexico State University Museum, SITE at the Goat Farm (Atlanta, GA), Art Fields (Lake City, SC), Stoveworks (Chattanooga, TN), the Barnes Ogden Gallery at Louisiana State University, and Science Gallery Atlanta. She has been an artist in residence at the Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies (Hudson Valley, NY), The Hambidge Center (Rabun Gap, GA), and was one of 7 artists selected for the Art & Social Justice Fellowship at Emory University in 2023. Current projects include Sonoran Heritage Waters with musicians and ecologists at Arizona State University and Hope Springs Eternal in collaboration with activist group RISE St. James and New Orleans-based artists. Bird is currently an MFA candidate at Georgia State University.

'Spring Beauties" - naturalist landscape, colorful, botanical, layered
By Carlyle Wolfe Lee
Located in Atlanta, GA
"Spring Beauties" is an abstract landscape featuring hues of green, purple and blue. This work is framed in a simple white frame behind Museum Glass measuring 28 by 36 inches.
Carlyle is inspired by the works of Claude Monet, Edouard Vuillard, Henri Matisse, Walter Inglis Anderson, Charles Burchfield, Ellsworth Kelly, Alexander Calder and Mary Delany.
This piece is part of a collaborative series by Carlyle and her husband Thad Lee. This body of work was made in tandem, through painting and photography, that explores their mutual delight in the natural world and within their own marriage.
Carlyle Wolfe’s paintings & works on paper are about an awareness of the natural world—becoming progressively, cyclically more present to its rhythms, gaining deeper understanding of its design, & acquiring direct experiential knowledge of its mysterious beauty. For the last 15 years, Wolfe has been making contour line drawings of plants form observation. From her drawings, she isolates silhouettes into paper stencils which she uses to create oil paintings & works on paper – or cut out of metal to make sculptures. Her work is cumulative in nature – gradually marking time & seasonal change, unity & variety, individual & collective beauty.
Wolfe grew up in Canton, Mississippi, & earned a BFA in painting from the University of Mississippi & an MFA in painting & drawing from Louisiana State University. She has also studied in Cortona, Italy, & at the University of Georgia. Wolfe has exhibited work throughout the South, including Spalding...

Busy Blue (Abstract Checkered Pattern Gouache and Collage on Paper)
By Donise English
Located in Hudson, NY
Donise English
Busy Blue, 2020
14" X 17" gouache and collage on paper
This abstract geometric composition on paper features a playful geometric motif that is inspired by the artist's interest in architecture and blueprint drawings. The geometric forms are made in a more painterly, gestural manner rather than with a hard edge. Paint is not heavily built up upon the surface but it certainly exhibits a tactile quality which is characteristic of the artist's aesthetic. English's work celebrates the quirky, unexpected qualities of shapes and colors.
About the artist:
Donise English is a Poughkeepsie-based artist who received her MFA from Bard College and is currently a Professor of Studio Art at Marist College in Poughkeepsie, NY.
Artist Statement:
I am interested in drawing and collaging multiple layers of information that refer abstractly to maps, architectural drawings and blueprints or patterns and structures found in such things as roller coasters, power lines and fences. I use gouache and collaged paper in a series of layers that are a visual and ideological response to the previous layer to define my pictorial space. For each piece I create a set of rules to follow about the use of a limited palette, a grid format, opacity of paper and whether a piece may include curving lines or maintain a rectilinear structure.
