About the Item
In this painting by Heather Hartman, lateral stripes of glossy metallic bronze are overlaid on a blue-grey painting featuring shadows of leaves in the descending sun. The blur effect on the underlying painting suggests that the leaves are blowing in the wind, and the disruption attributed to the hard-edged lines reminds us of window blinds, obstructing the silhouetted view.
Artist Statement:
Using reductive abstraction I synthesize memories, found images, and photographs of my surroundings into multilayered compositions. I have developed a process that involves painting on layers of paper and translucent polyester mesh. This allows me to explore illusionism both in paint and in actual space. The resulting images are a combination of blurry, atmospheric forms and distorted shadows that lie beneath washes of color, and intense passages of light.
In the paintings, the arrangement of these elements alludes to an ever-shifting landscape; a place where things slip in and out of focus and viewers cannot always locate themselves. This sense of shifting space is particularly relevant in an age where our relationship to physical place is increasingly tenuous. Our world is a transient one, and the struggle to capture something just on the edge of perception is what drives me to paint. The romanticism of the traditionally sublime landscape painting would now be a lie of omission. My role as a painter is to sort through the visual static and background noise found on the periphery of my daily life, and reorganize them into an experience that captures the sublime feeling of seeing something familiar as if for the first time.

Heather Hartman
Heather Hartman was born in Los Angeles, California. In December of 1989 her family moved to Tennessee, and Hartman was deeply impacted by the atmosphere, weather, and constantly changing skies in her new home. She attended Auburn University and received her Bachelor of Fine Art in 2005. She earned a Master of Fine Art with a concentration in Painting and Drawing at the University of Tennessee in 2009. Her work has been included in New American Paintings Juried Exhibition in Print, the 28th Annual McNeese Works on Paper National Exhibition, where she received a Juror’s Mention Award, as well as many other national juried exhibitions. Her work has appeared in publications including Burnaway Magazine, ArtNet, and Nashville Arts Magazine. She has paintings in Fidelity Corporate Art Collection, the collection of 21c Museum Hotels and the collection of Auburn University. Hartman lives and works in Knoxville, Tennessee where she is an Assistant Professor of Art at Carson-Newman University.
