Heidi Bucher
Untitled (Borg)

1975

About the Item

When Bucher moved back to Zurich from California in the mid-1970s and established her studio in an old butcher’s shop, she began creating latex castings of architectural elements, like floorboards and tiles. This move toward architectural material emerged from Bucher’s earlier practice in the years prior, which focused mostly on castings of small textiles and previously-worn clothing. In 1975, Bucher completed 'Untitled (Borg).' The casting takes as its template the tiled interior of the cold store room in Bucher’s studio. This room was in the center of the butcher’s shop and Bucher called it the “borg.” To create 'Untitled (Borg)', Bucher first took a textile and glued it onto the surface of the tiles with fish paste. Once that was dry, she painted over the textile with a layer of latex; when those layers had dried, Bucher tore the casting from the surface and coated it in mother-of-pearl pigment. The final product is a life-sized reproduction of the original surface in Bucher’s shiny, translucent material. The final product bears not only the traces and imprints of the tiled surface, but also the tiny particles – dust, dirt, paint – of the surface, which were bound up in the adhesive layer of glue.

  • Fading pink (#1)
    By Hernan Bas
    Located in New York, NY
Hernan Bas is best known for his narratively rich scenes that feature a wide-range of references spanning art and literature, popular culture, kitsch, the occult, religion, and mythology. Across his works, Bas seeks to defamiliarize everyday experience through humor, revealing the surreal and absurd lurking beneath the mundane. In conceiving this flamingo sculpture series, Bas was inspired specifically by the 19th century novel ‘Against Nature’ by Joris-Karl Huysmans. In the novel, the main character, an astute dandy of epic proportions, decides to cover a pet tortoise's shell with ornate jewels in order to see how the light would glimmer on it as it slowly treaded across his carpets. Bas imagined a fictional character of his own, a "Florida Dandy," who would naturally want bright pink flamingos as pets. The ball and chain keep them from flying away and simultaneously constrain them to a certain territory. . . . Fading pink (#1), 2016-2017 resin, feathers, rug, galvanized metal buoy...
