Helen Pond and her collaborator-husband Herbert Senn worked together on dozens of set designs. This particular piece was created as a preliminary design for Nancy Leeds' Great Scot! Play of 1965, which focused on Robert Burns' love life.
Pond and Senn were known internationally for their acclaimed set designs for Broadway shows, opera and ballet companies and for the 400 sets the couple designed at The Cape Playhouse in Dennis for 38 seasons.
The pair designed Broadway sets for “What Makes Sammy Run?,” “Roar Like a Dove,” “Oh, Coward,” and the 1982 revival of “Showboat,” and sets for “The Boys from Syracuse,” both for Off-Broadway and the Drury Lane production in London. In addition to the Boston Ballet, they designed scenery for hundreds of productions, most notably at the Opera Company of Boston, New York City Opera and the Houston Grand Opera. Bilson was born in Reykjavik, Iceland. At the age of five he moved to London, England, speaking Icelandic rather more fluently than English. He realised that nobody was listening and started to paint. His unique talent was first noticed a year later, when, at the age of six, he won an international Exhibition of Children’s Art competition in Prague, Czechoslovakia. At the age of nineteen he became a full-time professional: self-taught, self-propelled and completely self-supported. He has painted ever since.
Bilson has lived in various countries including Australia, Hong Kong, USA, Canada, Ireland and now resides happily in Iceland. There continues to be a great deal of travelling and painting on the move, as well as continuing to exhibit worldwide.
